Dear Families,
We are tremendously excited as we anticipate the start of school! We cannot wait to see your children again and welcome our newest learners to our school team!
This summer we met with our Strategic Planning Committee to dig deeply into our Vision, Mission and Core values. The time spent together and work done was so valuable as it frames our priorities and path for the upcoming school year. Last year, as a district, we explored what Joy, Value and Connection mean to us. Then, we were able to align that work to our UPES Strategic Plan. From that point, we developed our UPES Action Plan of “Every Child, Every Day.” This work resulted in our staff developing and sharing practices for our children to be more deeply connected to the adults and peers that they work with. It encompassed our daily practices and spilled into every meeting that we had, as it provided a clear framework for us and our goals as a building.
This year, we are excited to continue the work of Joy, Value and Connection. However, our building theme will be slightly adjusted to “Every Person, Every Day.” The reason for this change is that we confidently proclaim that the work we do is a team approach between our families, staff, and our children. While our focus continues to be doing the very best that we can for each child, we also recognize that this work cannot be done well without the constant care and communication between our families and staff. Their joy, value and connection also matter! As we dig into the work this year, we will continue to explore best practices to help each and every child feel connected, so they can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. We know that their elementary years will have a lasting impact on their lives and we are incredibly grateful, and honored to be a part of this!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger & Mrs. Sue Wilson

Incoming kindergartners are welcome to hop aboard and take a quick ride around the block. Parent/Student Handbook
When you have a few minutes, I suggest that you pour yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or another beverage, and read our Parent/Student Handbook. Link here Familiarizing yourself with our rules and procedures will be a huge help towards our family-school partnership, and, likely, answer many questions about how UPES operates.
Arrival and Dismissal/News About the Union Parking Lot
This year, we will continue to have walkers at the Union and Pleasant doors, as well as buses in the Hawkins lot and parent car drop off and pick up in the Union parking lot. If you are planning to drop your child off or pick your child up in the Union parking lot, we have changed the direction of the entrance and exit. Please be aware of this and cautious of the new directions for safety purposes!
We are welcoming the following new staff members to Union Pleasant this September:
Ms. Andrea DiCristofaro will be our new full-time social worker.

Dr. Matthew Dolegowski is our new Grade 1 teacher.
Mrs. Faith Baer will be returning to UPES as our ENL Teacher.
Ms. Wendy Decker will be our you Physical Therapist.
Ms. Erin Dougherty is our Intern Psychologist working with Mrs. Ganey

There are three ways to arrive and dismiss at Union Pleasant. For the first two weeks of school, our PTSA coordinates many parent volunteers who help our children navigate their way to their new classrooms. Thank you to our PTSA! Please see the videos attached that coincide with the arrival and dismissal plans that your child will use.
Arriving and dismissing by our buses. Fisher bus will be sending routes out closer to the start of the school year.
Arriving and dismissing as a walker via either our Union or Pleasant doors.
Arriving and dismissing by parent drop off or pick-up in our car line in our Union parking lot.
*** Please know that it is VERY IMPORTANT that we know where EVERY child is headed at dismissal time. This week an Operoo Form was sent to have parents share their children's dismissal plans with our main office. If you have not completed this form, please fill it out ASAP. If you did not receive it, please call our main office at 646-3280, option 1 to share your information with a secretary.
During the school day, if you must change your dismissal plan, the best way to do this is to send a note in with your child that the teacher will see in the beginning of the day. If a change must be made after your child arrives, we kindly ask that you contact our main office prior to
1:00 PM and ALSO send an email to mmurray@hcsdk12.org or jcarrig@hcsdk12.org indicating the change. The end of the day can often be a busy time with students at specials or outdoors. This will allow ample time for our secretaries to communicate the change of dismissal with your child's classroom teacher so that we ensure your child is dismissed at the proper location. We appreciate your help and understanding with this matter!
Parent Volunteers - New this Year:
All volunteers must complete the online training each year, even if you have been trained in the past. This includes class field trip volunteers. Instructions are now found in the Form Library of your Operoo account. This includes the link to the training along with information on registering for an account. We will need this done this well in advance of the date(s) you are planning to volunteer, as they must also be Board-of-Education approved before being a volunteer. Thank you.
Anytime your child is absent from school, a paper note must be sent to school with your child upon their return, stating the reason for the absence. If you do not turn in the note, the absence will become an unexcused absence. Parents, please check your child's report card for any unexcused absences and send in a note for those date(s). If you are uncertain of the date(s), please contact Margaret Duszynski in the Attendance Office in the morning at (716) 646-3288.
Please call the Attendance Office each day that your child is absent. Our phone number is (716) 646-3288. A message can be left at anytime school is not open. Please do not call the main office or email the teacher to report an absence.
If your child(ren) will be absent because of a vacation, please fill out a vacation form two weeks prior to your departure. These forms are available in the main office, on our district website or click on this link: Family Vacation Form .
