Dear Parents and Caretakers,
As we step into the new 2024 school year, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible community we have here at Union Pleasant. With the ringing in of the New Year, there is also a sense of renewal and a fresh start.
Firstly, I want to commend our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment to creating a nurturing environment where every student and family matters to us. Our students continue to place smiles on our faces with their zest for life, daily curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning. Additionally, we prioritize the importance of great communication between home and school. Please know that if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our wonderful teachers, our office or your admin team. Working together and supporting each other is one of our priorities that improves joy, value and connection.
In the coming months, we will continue to implement our new reading series which aims to enhance literacy skills, and foster a love for reading and knowledge. As I walk through classrooms, it is impressive to see the skills that our students are working on, the high levels of reading and comprehension, along with inquisitive minds over the facts and stories included in the series. Also, our teachers work with their students daily on our math curriculum. This year they are also carving out small pockets of time for additional math practice to increase number sense and math fact fluency. We are confident that this building wide initiative will increase the math skills of all our UPES learners.
As parents and caregivers, the more you can read with your children, whether it be in bed at night, or while waiting in line at the grocery store and reading labels, the more you will be supporting the work done in school, and fostering the importance and love of learning with your children. One of my favorite times to both discuss school, or work on math facts, was in the car. I often turned off the stereo and devices and we just talked. Whether asking about the best moment of their day, or something funny that happened, or asking basic math equations, it is a great way to interact with your child/children and foster home-school relationships.
PS- Pro-tip: Turning off the devices when friends are in the car and simply listening can provide a lot of laughs as well as a lot of intel about the relationship between your children and their friends.
With Warm Regards,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger

Uniquely U at UPES Submissions
A friendly reminder that if you would like to send a submission into our Uniquely U at UPES platform, sharing the selfless acts that your children are participating in, as well as those acts that build strong character traits, the link can be found here. We will be accepting submissions now through January 12, 2024.
Quick tip: A clear picture and sticking to 1-2 sentences to describe the character trait is best. It helps our young students reading these submissions to be more successful.
Parent Volunteers - New this Year:
All volunteers must complete the online training each year, even if you have been trained in the past. This includes class field trip volunteers and helping with holiday parties. Instructions are now found in the Form Library of your Operoo account. This includes the link to the training along with information on registering for an account. We will need this done this well in advance of the date(s) you are planning to volunteer, as they must also be Board-of-Education approved before being a volunteer. Thank you.

Winter Carnival Feb 8th - SAVE THE DATE and HELP NEEDED
The Winter Carnival will be returning to a format more familiar to years past and will include carnival games, prizes, a cake walk and crafts. The carnival will be moved to February 8th to, hopefully, accommodate more families due to conflicts on the weekends. More information will be available in January but for now we are looking for volunteers to help plan the event. If you are interested in helping out please email Lynn Mason at ltn46@hotmail.com.
Learning Fair March 21st
The Learning Fair is an exciting event UPES PTSA hosts where kids get to display their many interests. This event has been a huge success over the last several years thanks to Anna-Lesa Calvert. This year we are looking for someone who would like to work along side Anna-Lesa Calvert and co-chair the event. Please reach out to Lynn Mason at ltn46@hotmail.com if you are interested in shadowing or helping out this year.
Calendar and Dates
The PTSA will create and post a calendar for important dates, reminders, and spirit wear days at the start of each month to the PTSA Facebook page. This calendar will be pinned to featured as well. It is a helpful calendar to have, save or print out and use for reference. The school lunch menu for the month is also posted and pinned each month as well.
