The Harlan Community Vocal Music department has a rich history of excellence. The program includes 5th Grade Choir, 6th Grade Choir, 7/8th Grade Choir and the 9-12 Concert Choir. Each choir performs two to four mandatory home concerts a year, travels regionally and nationally, and are given a chance to collaborate with groups like The St. Elizabeth Chorale, Wartburg College. The curricular choirs have received consistent top ratings at IHSMA Large Group.
The program also offers high school show choir and chamber choir. The Varsity Show Choir, Breaking Cylence, competes both regionally and nationally and has placed in finals each year. The Chamber Choir (typically offered in the Spring) competes at IHSMA Solo/Small Ensemble Festival, regionally, and has received high ratings each year. In 2025, the Chamber Choir competed in the Festival of Music hosted at Worlds of Fun winning First Place in their division and receiving a Division I rating.
Students also participate in OPUS Honor Choir and All-State with students selected each year. Student participation in the IHSMA Solo/Small Ensemble Festival is always high with several students recieving top ratings each year.
