On May 10, 1940, during the Second World War, started the invasion of France of the Fall of France. In this the border countries with France were also annexed until D-Day.
France made the Maginot line to counter a maybe-German invasion, but didn't extend to neighboring countries, so Germany invaded them to get to France.
Germany made a surprise attack punching through the Ardennes and then along the Somme valley to pass allied forces already in Belgium. Germany then pushed the allied forces back to sea, like in Dunkirk.
Fall Rot began on June 5 on the same year, which destroyed the remaining allied divisions with German air dominance and mobility. And on June 14, Paris had a swastika over the Eiffel Tower. After the French military and Government collapsed, German commanders met with French officials 4 days later to negotiate an end to hostilities.
Another 4 days later, Germany made a french puppet state called the Vichy government led by Marshal Philippe Pétain. The Vichy regime in the south has hold of the free zone. In November 1942, axis also invaded Africa, until it was all freed in 1944, from D-Day.
