On 28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918, World War 1 began. A global conflict fought between two major ally groups called the Allies and the Central Powers, called Axis, battles happened in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific, some areas in Asia. The second bloodiest war in history, it was a bloodbath, about 9 million soldiers died and 23 million were wounded, and more than eight million civilians died from tons of things like genocide. WW1 was a very important thing during the Spanish Flu.
Tension was growing in Europe, but on 28 June 1914, when a Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian queen. Austria-Hungary said it was Serbia's fault and declared war on Serbia on July 28. Russia came to Serbia's defiance, and by 4 August, Germany, France, and Britain joined the war. A litte later, the Ottoman Empire also joined. Germany's plan to win WW1 was to annex France, then Russia. This didn't go planned though, and the Western Front had trenches upon trenches from the English Channel all the way to Switzerland. The Eastern Front was more dynamic. However, nobody could get an insane lead. When WW1 reached more territories, Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, Greece, and more nations joined.
Then in 1917, the big boy United States of America *star spangled banner intensifies* joined WW1 with the allies. Months later, the Bolsheviks took control in the Russian October Revolution, declaring peace in 1918 to the central powers. But Germany made an offensive west in 1918, and other than small success, Germany's army was not keeping up. Then a invasion by the allies made the frontline of Germany collapse. Before 1919, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary made peace with the allies. With Germany alone and, having a revolution in Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm II surrendered in November.
The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles, and would start WW2 because of that.
