The high school social studies program is designed to integrate knowledge and skills from history and the social sciences into a comprehensive instructional sequence. The overall goal is to prepare students for the responsibilities of citizenship. The content includes knowledge of democratic government, the dignity and self-worth of the individual, and equality of opportunity. The curriculum reinforces specific social studies skills introduced at the elementary and middle school years. Among these are geographic reasoning skills, social science research skills, critical thinking skills, historical reading and thinking skills, and both individual and group problem solving skills.
Beyond the goals and objectives of our curriculum, lies the real stuff of Social Studies, those experiences which develop in students a sense of civic efficacy. Good Social Studies instruction is meaningful, active, challenging, value-based, and cross-curricular. As students progress through the Social Studies program at Hammond, they will develop:
A sense of civic responsibility and place value on active civic participation
Perspectives on their own life experiences as they see themselves as part of the large human adventure in time and space
A critical understanding of the history, geography, economic, political, and social institutions, traditions, values, unity, and diversity of the Untied States.
An understanding of other peoples and the unity and diversity found in the world's history, geography, institutions, traditions and values.
Critical attitudes and analytical perspectives of the human condition.
