This portrait was painted in Florence between 1503 and 1506. However, Leonardo seems to have taken the portrait to France rather than giving it to the person who commissioned it. According to contemporary biographer Giorgio Vasari, the artist lingered over the portrait for four years and ultimately left it unfinished.

Unlike the Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl Earring is not a portrait but a tronie, a Dutch term for a character or type of person. Later, "Girl with a Pearl Earring" won the title of the Netherland's most beautiful painting in 2006 by popular vote.
