2.3 Solid Waste Reduction

Students Counting Markers for Upcycling- June 2018

4th gr. students helped to count markers of any kind to upcycle to the Crayola Company. This is a continued service we have done since 2014. The Crayola Company uses these markers to turn them into fuel, pavement, and roofing materials.


Kindergartners Making Compost Indoors-May 2019

Kindergartners (17 students) helped to make a compost bin. They used a large clear plastic tote bin. They put food scraps in and used compost worms to make the compost. They explored the soil after it was made by the worms and used the soil to grow plants in cups.

Recycling Monitors- Dec. 2019

The 3rd grade recycling monitors (3 classes) help students sort their breakfast items every morning. Recycling monitors are in most grades for morning breakfast recycling. The monitors stay a week until they have a new job. They teach students on how to sort.

The 3rd graders and a staff member talked about why they were recycling. Students wanted to save the dolphins. They were making connections with a story they had been reading in class and wanted to help make a difference.

Students Using Technology- Jan. 2020

Bridges After- School Green Team students in grades 3-5 (47 students) use technology to produce many posters and projects using creativity through Google Slides, Wixi, and Google Docs. By using technology, it helps to reduce paper, markers, and other supplies.

Students Putting Up Recycling Signs- Sept. 2021

Students ( gr. 5 and 3rd) put recycling signs in pod areas to help students sort trash from recycling. These signs will help in the solid waste reduction for morning breakfast.

Guilford Recycles More Campaign - December, 2021

Students in our Bridges After School Service Learning program ( 15 students gr. 3 -4th gr. ) made a Guilford Recycles More video about why and what to recycle. This movie shows our students and staff the importance of recycling.

Animals Made Out of Recycled Materials - January 2022

Students in 4th grade ( in 4 classes) made animals out of recycled materials. They used their creativity and ingenuity to come up with a replication of an animal using cardboard, bottle caps, cans, and a variety of objects to create their animal sculptures.

Three animal sculptures (below) have been made by art teacher and her intern to show students how they can create animals out of recycled materials using their creativity.
