Precalculus
Hanover County Public Schools
Precalculus is designed for students planning to go on to AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or IB Mathematics. It is a rigorous study of advanced algebra, a comprehensive study of functions, and an extensive study of trigonometry.
The Virginia Department of Education does not provide standards for Precalculus that include Trigonometry, instead providing standards for a one-year course in Mathematical Analysis and a one-semester course in Trigonometry. Hanover County's Precalculus course includes all of the suggested standards for Trigonometry and the following selected standards from Mathematical Analysis: MA.CF.1 (Identify and analyze properties of functions), MA.FR.1 (composition and inverse of functions), MA.FR.2 (exponential and logarithmic functions), MA.FR.3 (sequences and series), and MA.AG.1 (conic sections). Mathematical Analysis standards that are excluded from Precalculus are: MA.CF.2 (limits), MA.CF.3 (continuity), MA.AG.1a (matrix definition of a conic section), MA.AG.2 (parametric equations), MA.AG.3, (vectors), MA.AG.4 (polar equations), MA.AG.5 (matrices).
