JCAS YEAR 1 2023

Objectives

Our Y1 JCAS journey focuses on the themes of leadership, sustainability and the environment. We seek to impart students with the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model through activity-based experiential learning and equip them in the areas of: a) Communication b) Teamwork and c) Planning ability.

27th January Uncle Tony Workshop

We kick-started the year by inviting veteran gardener Uncle Tony to our school to teach us the skills of growing young saplings. We learnt a lot from his invaluable expertise and advice on how to sustain these fragile young plants!

10th February Vegepod Activity 1

The weather was fair and we started our first Vegepod Planting activity by planting Kai Lan in the pods. We had to rake up the old soil, add new Perlite and fresh soil to prepare the pod beds. We then dug 7 by 14 holes and planted our new seedlings. Luckily, the rain helped us to water the young seedlings!

Leadership workshop, 17th February to 24th March

Today, we embarked on our first leadership workshop training, where we will formulate a plan to advocate for environmental causes through social media. The Five Practices we learnt from the workshop are: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart.

 JCAS Showcase, 12th May

Today was the culmination of our hard work and effort as we presented our final showcase to the school on our Semester 1 JCAS activities. Our theme was on developing environmental awareness and campaigns on saving the environment. We learnt about the current issues affecting the environment and practical ways to overcome waste and pollution. We also established great teamwork in collaborating with our classmates in skit performances and video production.

Confidence Workshop, 30th June

The confidence workshop held on the 30th June is an immersive and transformative experience aimed at empowering students to unleash their full potential. The students engage in a series of dynamic activities and exercises designed to cultivate self-assurance and resilience. Through interactive sessions, they explore the core principles of confidence, such as positive self-talk, body language, and assertiveness.

Conservation of Marine Diversity, 30th June - by Biogirl MJ

Biogirl MJ is back in HCIS to share her experience on the conservation of marine diversity. Check out her Youtube blogs and her passion for marine life on her social media. We are privileged to share in her enthusiasm and learn from her extensive experience in marine life preservation.

Global Diversity Carnival, 21st July 2023

Our Global Diversity Carnival celebrates Singapore as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural society. Different foods from different cultures were displayed and we had delicious snacks like Kacang Puteh, Malt Candy, Tutu Kueh and Muah Chi. Students were also encourage to come in their ethnic clothes to win prizes for the Best Dressed Competition.

HCIS Gives Back, 8th August 2023

On our annual give-back day, we participated in a beach clean-up activity with MJ Biogirl at Changi Coast beach.

Reflection on HCIS Gives Back, 11th August 2023

It was a meaningful experience that not only helped the environment but also provided us with a sense of fulfillment. We deliberately picked this obscure area where less people were likely to come and we were able to gain a better understanding of the issue of marine litter and its impacts. We found a lot of trash that doesn't belong on the beach, such as sticks, candy wrappers, straws, and plastic cups. Picking up all this trash made us feel refreshed and greater connected to nature.

International Chess Workshop, 22nd September 2023

A chess workshop for the Year 1 students was conducted on the 22nd September to introduce them to the game of chess and help them develop their skills and abilities to think analytically. The workshop focuses on teaching students the basic rules of chess, including how each piece moves and how to set up the board. It also aims to develop strategic thinking by teaching students how to think ahead and plan their moves. Through the workshop, the students learn how to improve their concentration and focus for extended periods of time.
