STEM @ Apison Elementary
STEM @ Apison Elementary
I would like to welcome you to Apison's VW eLab. I am Apison's STEM Teacher and VW eLab Specialist. When you come to my classroom, you will be exploring STEM concepts. In our lab, I expect you to be creative and try your best. I can't wait to see what you create with our digital fabrication equipment.
STEM is the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in a hands-on, lab setting. During our projects, each of our students will be given the same project parameters. These parameters are not directions or a step-by-step guide. The goal of STEM is to explore and unleash student creativity in a directed manner that encourages discovery. Our students will complete their own planning and research before designing and building any final projects. Failure is a possibility, but not the end of our work. In STEM, failure is the start of new learning and the first building block for our next prototype.
Two of Our Guiding Principles in STEM
Productive struggle is a process of learning that develops grit and creative problem solving. When students face challenges they don't immediately know how to solve, we don't want them to give up. We want them to engage in making connections to things they already know, think creatively, and try different methods of problem solving as they work towards a solution or strategy. Productive struggle is intended to help students develop perseverance, flexible thinking, and active learning. This state of engagement can be somewhat uncomfortable for students as they experiment with trial-and-error.
Learning from failure is a process that involves gaining insights from failures and using them to modify future projects. It can help students build their confidence, increase their resilience, and understand that failure is a step in the process instead of the end of the process. In the learning from failure mindset, it is believed that success comes from a mixture of ability and effort. With effort being more important. This growth mindset is about learning how to fail well, and knowing that learning from failure is what leads to eventual success. This can be summed up in the sentence “I can't do that… YET.”
