History of the brand:
The perfume belongs to the Cartier history since its beginnings: indeed Cartier started to create perfume bottles in 1850, 3 years only after the creation of the Maison. At that time, it was only special orders for bespoke bottles. They were unique bottles of perfume, real art objects, created for wealthy customers who were coming to the 13 rue de la Paix boutique with their own essence, asking for a bespoke bottle.
How it was founded:
In 1938, Jeanne Toussaint registered the CARTIER PARFUMS brand.
Jeanne Toussaint was a very close friend of Coco Chanel who had launched Chanel N°5 a few years prior. Coco Chanel encouraged her friend to launch a perfume under the Cartier name.
Jeanne Toussaint imagined a collection of fragrances for which she chose names of precious stones: Nassak, Cumberland and koh-i-Noor. She also imagined the bottle as a block of multifaceted-cut crystal …
But the 2nd world war came and interrupted the project right before the launch.
NB: Jeanne Toussaint was a very well-known courtesan of the “Belle Epoque” , she became the lover of Louis Cartier and he entrusted her with the direction of the High Jewellery department of Cartier in 1933.

The first Cartier Fragrance, Must de Cartier was launched in 1981 : The fragrance is the first fresh oriental in the perfume market, a unique green oriental that revolutionized the perfumery and defined the olfactory style of la Maison Cartier Parfums. An olfactory style made with excess and simplicity.
In 2005, Mathilde Laurent joined Cartier Parfums and became our In-House Perfumer.
With her passionate, assertive character, Mathilde Laurent stands for signature fragrances unfettered by norms and conventions.
We believe on bold creative exploration : more than an in-House Perfumer, Mathilde acts as the Artistic Director of Cartier Parfums, making sure that all elements linked to our fragrances respect the Cartier style.
We create invisible jewellery to move the heart : perfume is a parure, like a piece of jewellery. This is an olfactory ornament so nobody can see it , it is Cartier invisible jewellery.
