FAQs and Scheduling Q&A

RISING 6TH, 7TH & 8TH Scheduling q&a

1) Should my child take advanced Courses?

We recommend the students speak with their current core teacher(s) to help them make this decision. Teachers will sign off on the choice sheet if they agree. Students who are interested will relate to some of the following: organized, responsible, looking for a challenge, passed STAAR in that subject.

Please know, we will look at data to help determine the best fit for each student, and choosing Pre-AP on a choice sheet doesn't guarantee entry into that course.

See the district information about advanced math released here.

2) What are some things I need to make sure I do on my choice sheet?

-If  you choose a semester course in your top picks, please pick another semester course to pair it up with for the other semester.

-Your #1 & #2 choices are your desired elective selections. Numbering past that will help us with giving you the proper back-up selections in case your first or second choices aren't available. If selections are not made, counselors will do it for you.

3) What are the requirements for PE/Athletics/Dance in middle school?

Every student must take 2 years, or 4 semesters of a PE credit course. This can be done by taking PE, Athletics or Dance. Those who would like to take dance for their PE credit should not select anything in the PE and Athletics section, but instead select dance in the electives column as their #1 choice. This will ensure they meet their PE credit requirements.

4) Does my child have to have any pre-requisites to sign up for HS Credit courses in 7th or 8th grade?

7th graders can take GTTBYR (GTT III & GTT IV) IF they have taken GTTAYR for a HS Credit. Native Spanish speakers can also take Spanish for native Speakers I & II (NSBLOCK) if they qualify through a language proficiency test.

8th graders have many options:

5) What if my child has a required support class?

Some students have a core course that is resource (Math or Language Arts). Having this course will not affect the number of elective courses they will have.

Other students have classes such as ESL support, Reading or Math intervention, or Dyslexia class. These courses will affect the student's ability to have multiple electives, because this class will take up one of those available spots.

6) If I am in band, mariachi, or choir, how do I know which class I will be in?

Teachers of these courses will hold tryouts and provide lists to the counselors over the summer. We will then place the student in correct course section based on this information.

7) Are there any courses that have pre-requisites?

Yes.

-GTT must be taken in the proper order-  GTTAYR (I & II) and GTTBYR (III & IV).

-Students who want to take art, theater, dance, mariachi, choir or band for the first time (with the exception of 8th graders registering for HS Credit courses) will register for MS1.

-Signing up for JAZZ BAND requires also taking BAND MS2 concurrently. This means 2 elective periods will be taken by band and Jazz band.

8) What do I need to know about athletics?

-If a student is interested in participating in athletics, they must have a physical from a doctor.

-Signing up for and trying out for a sport will go through the coaches- this information is not required for the choice sheet.

9) Should I still fill out my choice sheet if I am moving?

YES! We can always pass along the information to the next school. We like to have your choices just in case things change.

10) What if I am interested in signing up for being an office aide or teacher's aide?

That is a separate application process that will happen when we return to to school in the fall.

11) What if I change my mind and decide to change my selections?

The first week back in the fall will be designated for schedule changes in SPECIAL circumstances, such as missing a core course, or moving you from a class you have already taken. We are allowing the time now for students make choices they think are best for them. We will also send home "VERIFICATION" sheets around April to make any final changes in choices. We would like to avoid schedule changes as much as possible in August.

13) Is it possible I could be in 7th or 8th grade, but in a class with 6th graders?

Yes. We have many courses that are offered to multiple grade levels.
