Students are motivated by a myriad of things. Find out what motivates them and use it! What is motivational for one student in your class may not be for another. We will not debate the use of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators here; everyone has their own opinion on that. This page is a collection of things teachers have found to be motivational for some of their students.
One thing to note here- teachers who are using traditional, teacher-centered learning models tend to have more difficulty motivating students to engage in the learning than teachers who use a student-driven and/or personalized learning approach. Many teachers I have spoken to who have moved to blended and personalized models have told me students are much more engaged, motivated and have improved classroom behavior. This is a purely unscientific statement however and you are invited to test it out for yourself!
