Frequently Asked Questions
What is AmeriCorps?
Think of the Peace Corps, but in your own backyard. AmeriCorps is a national service program, with more than 80,000 individuals joining and serving each year. AmeriCorps members are individuals who are eager to help their communities while gaining skills and experience to support their future career goals.
What is the term of service?
The term of service is the length of time you are committing to serve in the program. Nearly all of our positions begin in September 2023 and end dates vary depending on the positions. See position start and end dates here.
Are there basic qualifications?
AmeriCorps members must be at least 17 years old, pass a national service criminal history check, and hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident. Regardless of the program, a criminal history involving a murder conviction and/or a crime that requires the individual to register as a sex offender will automatically disqualify them from serving through AmeriCorps.
What is the living allowance?
AmeriCorps members receive a modest living stipend paid twice each month for their service to the community. The total amount for the entire period of service varies depending on each position and the hour commitment, which are indicated here.
What is an education award?
Upon completion of AmeriCorps service terms, members receive funds that may be used towards the cost of future education expenses or to repay existing student loans. The amount of the education award is based on the total service time commitment, which are indicated here.
