This page highlights course design resources including ready-to-use course starter templates and fully ID-designed courses created in partnership with instructors to support high-quality, student-centered learning experiences.
The Leeward Course Starter Template (CST) is a campus-specific 16-week course site pre-populated with consistent navigation and visual design, placeholder content aligned with online standards, and customized components including an AI Course Expectations page. The CST also includes a Week 1 Lesson (Grounding Our Learning: ʻĀina, Moʻolelo, and Building Pilina) available for instructors to use as-is to support students in building pilina to the campus and to one another, as well as the corresponding Discussion (Hoʻolauna and Pilina).
The purpose of this CST is to support instructors in developing high-quality course content and to provide students with intuitive Lamakū navigation.
There are several UH System Lamakū CSTs, such as 5-week, 16-week, and Face-to-Face Web-Enhanced formats. These are sample course sites pre-populated with consistent navigation, visual design, and placeholder content. These CSTs are generic templates branded with UH System gold. Access the Lamakū Course Starter Template: Companion Guide to get started.
ID-Designed Courses pilot a collaborative course development model in which: Instructional Designers (IDs) serve as course architects, and Faculty serve as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Using faculty-provided content, courses are intentionally redesigned by IDs to align with the UH Quality Online Standards and prepared for delivery in future terms. This model is especially responsive to the realities of higher education teaching—particularly for lecturers and new instructors who are often hired shortly before a semester begins and may not yet have a course site, syllabus, or instructional materials ready.
By producing fully developed ID-designed courses, this initiative supports both instructors and students by providing:
Ready-to-use, high-quality course sites: Reduce onboarding stress and support a positive, consistent student experience from day one.
Consistent, student-centered learning experiences: Improve navigation, engagement, clarity, and accessibility across course sections.
Replicable course models: Designed to be shared, supporting long-term sustainability and continuous improvement.
A growing library of exemplar courses: Courses that lecturers and other instructors can adopt or adapt, reducing variability and supporting student success across sections.
Ke Ala ʻIke Scholars Program seeks to inspire all Leeward CC students to hāpai (carry, fulfill) their kuleana (responsibilities) in academics and Hawaiian culture while focused on excellence and achievement on the way toward earning any Associate degree or certificate. This ID-Designed course was made in collaboration with Kumu Momi Kamahele and Lauren Lum Ho (ID).
Through the Innovation Center for Teaching and Learning (ICTL)'s Innovation in Action mini-grant, two existing online courses are currently being redesigned for Fall 2026 delivery. These courses will be aligned with the UH Quality Online Standards, include indigenized content, and serve as high-impact exemplars of the ID-Designed Courses model.
