In this section, you’ll find downloadable lesson plans related to a variety of cultures. While the term "cultures" often is used to refer to characteristics that are common within any one country, there are also multiple cultures within the boundaries of a country, as well as cultures that cross borders. Additionally, many multilingual people are also multicultural. The activities below encourage learners to use Englishes to explore cultures that interest them, and also to develop and enhance their ability to talk about their own cultures.

Overview: Students explore Hawaiʻi's multiculturalism and the mixes of language that are used regularly in Hawaiʻi, through looking at ways words with Japanese origin that were appropriated into the local language in Hawaiʻi. (Although originally designed for a class where all the learners had Japanese as their L1, it could be used in classes with students who have a mix of L1s.)
