In Ontario, students entering Grade 9 can begin accumulating their 40 hours of community involvement as early as the summer before Grade 9. These hours are a mandatory part of earning the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and must be completed by the end of Grade 12. The goal is for students to build civic awareness, explore career possibilities, and develop essential transferable skills through meaningful community engagement.
Eligible Activities include:
Working with non‑profits
Health care or public institutions
Cultural or community events
School Events outside of class hours
Ineligible Activities include:
Paid work
Routine home chores
Court‑ordered service
Activities tied to school credits
The Volunteer Opportunities Bank (VOB) is a great place to start looking for ideas to begin your community volunteering. These opportunities are external and therefore not associated with Havergal Collegel. Please do your own research to ensure they are a good fit for you.
Community Involvement Hours Update
We are excited to share that we have moved to a digital process for submitting Community Involvement Hours.
Students will now be required to complete the new digital Community Involvement Form, which must be uploaded directly to Veracross for submission. This transition will ensure more efficient and accurate tracking of student hours.
Instructions on how to submit hours can be found in the following locations:
Student Portal: On the home page under the green button labelled “Community Involvement”
Parent Portal: Navigate to “Upper School” > “Student Life” > “Community Involvement”
