On-Campus Jobs

Here you will find information about the various jobs you can do for the Chemistry Department! Clicking on the links below will take you to the section on that type of job.

General job descriptions should be listed on the CCPA Campus Job Board. Information on how to apply for specific jobs, however, is best found below.

Chemistry Department Academic Assistance

For any of the jobs in the drop downs below, having taken the associated class is the only requirement to be eligible for the job. For many of these jobs, professors email all eligible students asking for people who are interested. If there's something you want to do, however, don't wait for that email! Go ahead and email the professor teaching the course and let them know you're interested. If you don't know who the right professor to contact is, ask any chemistry professor and they can point you in the right direction. It's best to email at the beginning of the summer (for the fall semester) and in December (for the spring semester). If you don't hear back in 1-2 weeks, follow up! Professors can be busy and miss emails.

The professors for most courses change every year, but Kelly Matz (kelly.matz@gmail.com) and Mark Stein (mstein@haverford.edu) are permanent instructors for 111/112 and 222/225 labs, respectively.

Jobs include:

Lab TAs:

Job description: Lab TAs help out with running (bi)weekly lab sections, hold a weekly office hour, and assist in grading lab assignments/notebooks. Weekly time commitment ranges from 4-7 hours, depending on the week and class. TAs for orgo and superlab typically work more hours than TAs for gen chem.

Fall Semester: 111/113 (Gen Chem), 115 (Inquiry Lab), 222 (Orgo), 301 (Chem Superlab)

Spring Semester: 112/114 (Gen Chem), 225 (Orgo), 302 (Chem Superlab), 303 (Biochem Superlab)

Class TAs:

Job description: Class TAs serve as an additional resource for students taking the class. They either hold office hour sessions (typically more than 1hr/week) or assist with recitations. They are also available for more informal student contact and help with classwork. Professors sometimes use TAs to test run practice problems and for advice on the structure of the course. Weekly time commitment ranges from 3-10 hours depending on the class (Orgo being on the lower end and Pchem/Qchem on the higher end).

Fall: 222 (Orgo), 304 (P Chem)

Spring: 104 (Intro to Programming + Gen Chem), 225 (Orgo), 305 (Q Chem)

Graders:

Job description: Fairly self explanatory, graders grade work for the class. Time commitment ranges from 2-6 hours, depending on the number of students taking the class and the number of students working as graders.

Fall: 111 (Gen Chem), 222 (Orgo), 304 (P Chem)

Spring: 112 (Gen Chem), 225 (Orgo), 305 (Q Chem)

Chemistry Question Center (CQC) TAs:

Job description: CQC is run by TAs and normally has 3-4 sessions a week (though you wouldn’t work all of them). CQC helps students taking Gen Chem and Orgo with problem sets and other questions they might have about class concepts. You can be a Gen Chem CQC TA, an Orgo CQC TA, or both! Weekly time commitment ranges from 2-4 hours.

Fall/Spring: CQC TAs are typically responsible for helping with Gen Chem (111/112/113/114) and Orgo (222/225).

Peer-led, team-learning (PLTL) leaders:

**Program last run 2019-2020**

Job description: PLTL is organized groups of students (5-7 per group) who work through course related problems with a PLTL leader (someone who has already taken the course). Prior to the group’s weekly meeting, each student attempts the problems on their own. At the weekly meeting, the PLTL leader helps the students work together through the problems. All group meetings are required for participants and the goal is to help build team problem solving skills while learning chemistry. Weekly time commitment ranges from 2-4 hours.

Fall/Spring: Has been done for Gen Chem (111/112/113/114) and Orgo (222/225).

Currently (2020-2021) there isn't an available faculty member to run the program, but hopefully it will be back in the future!

Instrument help

The Chemistry Department hires a few students to assist in routine maintenance and operation of specific analytical instrumentation. You'll be trained and supervised by Bash Kokona, the Chemistry instrument specialist. Requirements are an interest in analytical chemistry, basic mechanical and computer skills, and an ability to work closely with others. Weekly time commitment is 2-4 hours.

Instruments you could work on: GCMS, LCMS, NMR, optical spectroscopy instruments (CD, fluorimeter, UV-Vis, plate reader). The Chemistry Department instrument page has more information on instrument specifics.

If you're interested in this position, email Bash (bkokona@haverford.edu) expressing your interest.

Peer Tutoring (OAR)

For Chemistry, you can be a peer tutor for CHEM 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 222, and/or 225. You don't have to pick just one class! The only requirement for being eligible is that you have previously taken the course.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Priority deadlines are typically in August for the fall semester and December for the spring semester.

Peer tutoring is a super flexible job--you get to set your own hours and there is no minimum/maximum.

See the OAR Peer Tutor page for more information and the application!

Paid Research

From the Chemistry Department Research Page

"Certain Chemistry faculty members may employ students as hourly, work-study research assistants in the laboratory during the academic year: this can be helpful if a student is interested in earning supplemental income or in turning a work-study commitment into research laboratory time."

Visit the Research Page for more information on joining a research lab, and then you can talk about this possibility with your research professor.
