Chemistry Student Group

Mission statement

We are a group of students with various experiences in the chemistry department who want to work to make the chemistry department more accessible. We want to ensure that all students, despite their different cultural and academic backgrounds, can be successful within the classes taken in the department and comfortable with the culture of the department. We are hoping to work with professors to increase transparency between faculty and students and create a culture of faculty accountability to students, both majors and non-majors.

Students of color and non cis-men have historically been unsupported within the Haverford chemistry department so we hope to increase awareness through conversations regarding race, class and gender within our department and in STEM, in general. Science is not solely objective and removed from reality--it is constantly affected by inequalities such as racism and sexism--and we hope that this student group can address these inequalities and strive to make Haverford's chemistry department accessible and safe to all students.

CSG Student Guide

"The purpose of this Student Guide is to provide tips, resources, and advice from upperclassmen who have taken introductory chemistry to underclassmen. We aim to lessen the stress of navigating intro chem culture/classes/labs and making chem opportunities more accessible to students wanting to explore becoming a TA, getting to research, etc.. Becoming involved in the chemistry department shouldn’t be a hard or mysterious process!"

CSG FEEDBACK

We all know that the chemistry department is far from perfect. We, the student group, already have some issues within the department we've been brainstorming for a little bit now but before we approach the faculty about it, we want to hear your feedback--what do you think the issues are in the chemistry department? What challenges within the department, both as majors and non-majors, have you faced? Fill out this feedback form and let us know!!

We also know that we won't get it right 100% of the time. Have any feedback, suggestions, or concerns about us? Fill out the form and let us know!
