Hauppauge Public Schools welcomes students, and their families, who are English Language Learners (ELLs) and bring cultural and language diversity to our school community. As we introduce our students to the English language, we assist them in developing a deeper understanding of their own language and culture, as well as the diverse cultures that exist in the Unites States.

The work of English as a New Language (ENL) teacher is to provide support for their students and make language and content available to ELLs at their current level of proficiency. Through collaboration with the classroom teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators, ELLs are provided with scaffolded instruction and assessments designed to improve and develop English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while mastering course content. ELLs are serviced both through integrated or co-taught classes where ENL teachers work with main stream teachers make the content accessible and comprehensible to the students as well as through stand-alone ENL classes in which the students meet with the ENL teacher for more targeted support. ELLs exit the program by demonstrating the required level of English proficiency on the NYSESLAT exam.
