Critical Thinking
ENG 2
June 10th-August 3rd
By Maria Garcia Teutsch
This is your syllabus for our course.
Welcome!
I am looking forward to meeting you and working with you to reach your educational goals.
In order to succeed you are responsible for all of your homework assignments and they must be turned in on time. NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED. Life happens, I understand this, but I do not accept late work. Having said that, if you come to me with a compelling reason as to why you may need to turn in the assignment after the due then I will undoubtedly allow for an extension--once. the compelling reason must be something other than "I am tired," or "I am busy." We will begin this class working from the premise that we are all tired and busy, this is not an excuse, it is merely a state of being. Weeks run from Monday 8:00 am to Sunday 11:00 pm. Weeks close at Midnight. I teach in a collaborative learning environment; therefore, we are only as strong as our weakest link. Everyone is expected to enter into conversation during the group forum discussions. It is most important to me that your voice be heard. You also need to participate on peer editing forums which means when you submit a rough draft you must also be prepared to edit a peer’s rough draft. You will also be given 1-2 essays which will model what I am asking you to do for each paper. You will write a 1 page typed response for each posting (200-250 words), and keep a reading and writing portfolio.
The benefits of taking online courses are many: no more early morning classes, no more parking woes, no more rescheduling at work. But with these benefits come some responsibilities different from those of the traditional classroom. In order to be successful in this course, you must above all else want to learn. In any class, learning is reciprocal. The teacher cannot implant the information in your brain; you must open yourself to it. In an online environment, this exchange is even more important. In short, you must be motivated. If you are the kind of student who has trouble completing assignments, or who needs face-to-face interaction with your instructor and/or other students, this may be harder for you. But, if you are self-motivated, if you like the idea of a class that will allow you to work whenever you are at your best while still meeting deadlines, and if you are open to exploring new ways of communication with your instructor and classmates, this is the place for you! Another advantage: You can track your grades under the Grades Tab.
P.S. More details about this can be found in the Home Page of our Canvas course and in your welcome email.
Welcome/Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes
Welcome to your English 2 Class!
An Online Course is different than regular courses. You may have a few questions which need to be answered before you feel comfortable taking this class. I think it would be helpful to take the following test, What Makes a Successful Online Student? (Links to an external site.). You must also always follow the rules of netiquette (Links to an external site.).
The Objectives for this course are as follows:
Increased skill in reasoning clearly:
Understanding of the inductive and deductive process of reasoning, including the ability to recognize valid/invalid arguments; sound/unsound arguments; and strong/weak arguments.
Skill in analyzing arguments and assessing the credibility of their premises, including their "backing" and related assumptions and implications
Awareness of critical fallacies (of language and thought ) and an appreciation of the power of their persuasiveness
Improved skill in expository writing as well as the ability to advocate a position based on sound and credible argumentation
Increased awareness in the writing process of the rhetorical importance of the character of the audience and the character of the writer
Increased skill in critical reading, including an awareness of the power of language to obscure and mislead
We will get to these objectives through our group discussion boards, weekly online assignments, webliography annotations, quizzes and exams and all of these will be done online.
English 2 / Student Learning Outcomes
1. Write coherent, well developed essays appropriate to the second semester transfer level on the study of various advanced argumentation forms.
2. Analyze, interpret, evaluate, and discern the arguments and possible fallacies in non-fiction publications.
I fully expect you to contact me immediately as soon as a problem comes up or any confusion sets in: private message me using the Discussion and Private Messages tab. I check my messages Monday through Thursday from 10-4pm. The best way to succeed in your online class is to make a schedule and stick to it. You should plan to spend at least two hours a night on class requirements home work. You need to purchase the books prior to our first class meeting.
My preferred communication method is the CANVAS inbox
(from our course, click 'Inbox' in the left global navigation menu).
Other methods:
email: mteutsch@hartnell.edu
If you contact me Monday-Thursday, I will respond within 24 hours. During the weekends, it might take me a bit longer.
The Q&A discussion forum in our class is a great place for general course-related questions. Your peers might even answer you there! If your question is personal in nature, please send it directly to me through the Canvas inbox.
What is appropriate for the Q&A? Questions pertaining to the course (ex: where do I find that, can you provide more info about this topic, something isn't working properly, etc.)
What is not appropriate for the Q&A? Questions pertaining to your personal situation (ex: keeping me informed about your needs, extension requests, etc.). These questions should be sent to me directly using the Canvas inbox.
