Summative Assessment: History of Journalism Project
In this assessment, students will create either an infographic or a TikTok video that highlights and explains at least 5 major events or milestones in the history of journalism.
Unit Overview
In this first unit of Journalism & Media, students will build an understanding of what it means to be a journalist with integrity and how to interact with their subject. They will be exposed to the history of the news and journalism in the United States and various concepts related to journalism, such as bias, types of news, and how news is presented and received.
In this assessment, students will write an article in one of the journalistic formats studied in this unit. The article should focus on a current news topic relevant to the local community.
Unit Overview
In this second unit of Journalism & Media, students will develop an understanding of how to plan for journalistic writing and conduct interviews. They will also explore and write various types of journalistic writing. In this unit, students will begin crafting articles, leading to the writing of a class newspaper. Students should practice the following types of news articles: opinion, interview, editorial, feature, etc.
For this culminating assignment, students will compile a portfolio showcasing their best work from this journalism course. The portfolio should contain various journalist pieces, including news articles, features, editorials, and a reflection.
Unit Overview
The third unit of Journalism & Media is designed to be used throughout the course as a student-led project-based unit. This unit will teach students to plan journalistic pieces, interview, prepare information, publish, and reflect. The pieces are student-generated and designed, and teachers will have the flexibility to address needs as they arise in the student process. Students will use this unit to create a journalism portfolio of written and/or video-recorded articles/ stories.
