Unit 1 - Overcoming Adversity through Perseverance

In this assessment, students will write a personal essay for a college application from the Common App or another college of their choice.

This personal narrative writing unit explores the theme of overcoming adversity. Through reflective prompts and storytelling techniques, students will craft narratives illuminating growth, perseverance, and the capacity to triumph over challenges. The unit aims to inspire, empower, and foster empathy by sharing diverse stories of resilience while serving as a platform for individuals to present a nuanced and authentic portrayal of their character to college admissions.

In this assessment, students will write an argumentative essay that presents an issue, takes a position on the issue, and develops an argument to convince the reader that this position is correct.

This argumentative writing unit gives students the skills to construct compelling and persuasive arguments. Throughout the unit, students will explore the principles of effective argumentative writing, including rhetorical strategies, logical reasoning, and the ethical considerations of persuasive writing. This unit aims to equip students with the tools to navigate diverse perspectives, critically evaluate evidence, and thoughtfully contribute to meaningful discourse.

In this assessment, students will research a topic and present it to their peers

Students will prepare for college-level research expectations by developing a research question in a field of interest, learning how to use a search engine for peer-reviewed journals, and citing sources using the appropriate format for the field. They will practice these skills by conducting group research and presenting their findings. Students will then use their research to write an independent research paper.

In this assessment, students will practice marketing themselves for college and employment by creating a personal website, video, or slide deck.

A crucial aspect of post-secondary writing is the ability to market oneself. In this unit, students will practice persuasive writing by creating a virtual resume that they may use to market themselves to higher education institutions and the workforce beyond. Students will first work to write a strong resume, cover letter, sample interview responses, and a personal essay of introduction (such as a cover letter or introductory email) that can be used to market themselves effectively to both colleges and potential employers. Students will engage in mock interviews to practice speaking skills. Students will be asked to choose between creating a video, slideshow presentation, or a website that highlights aspects of their academic career and personal skills in a persuasive manner.
