A LOCKDOWN situation exists when there is a need for students to be contained in a secured area. An armed intruder on campus, news of a potential drive-by shooting, a known location of an explosive device, etc. could necessitate a LOCKDOWN. With some types of bomb threats, a LOCKDOWN might be safer than an evacuation.
The “signal” for a lockdown will be either by verbal direction of the site administrator or designees or by a direct telephone call to the classroom made by the site administrator or designee.
Upon receiving notification of the need for a LOCKDOWN, teachers should do the following:
Remain calm
Share the facts with the students and avoid escalating emotions
(Ex: We may have a shooter on campus. We need to stay calm and move away from the windows and doors.)
If possible, lock the door(s) or barricade the doorway with desks or tables
Move students away from windows and door(s)
Direct students to arm themselves
Instruct students to stay low, sitting or laying on the floor
Wait for the next instructions
PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS SILENCE THEIR CELL PHONES DURING A LOCKDOWN.
Excessive calls may prevent or interfere with outside communication with law enforcement and our district office, as well as add to the general confusion of the situation. Also, signals from a cell phone can detonate an explosive device.
Teachers should not unlock the door or release any students for any reason until directed to do so. The “all clear” will be given by verbal communication, most likely via telephone from the administrator, office personnel, or law enforcement.
Should the need to LOCKDOWN arise during passing period or lunch, students should be directed inside to the nearest secure location. Teachers should go immediately to the classroom in which they would teach next. Direct any and all students in the area into a classroom as quickly as possible. It does not need to be the room for their next class - just get them in. Teachers should attempt to calm the students, keep them down and away from the windows and doors, and identify all students in the classroom, writing down the names of all the students who are present. The site administrator or designee will collect the information as soon as possible. Follow the same protocol as above.
