Concept: To describe motion, you need to know a reference point, distance, and direction of travel.
Guiding Question: How do we decide when an object is moving?
Without knowing certain information, you cannot tell if an object is in motion. One must have a reference point and a direction to be able to describe the motion of something.
Concept: How to measure and graph speed.
Guiding Question: How can speed be calculated and visually represented?
On a distance vs. time graph, the slope of the line will give the speed of the object.
Concept: Speed is the rate of change (ratio) between distance (D) and time (T).
Guiding Question: What can D/T graphs tell us about the motion of an object?
We can use graphing tools, such as Vernier Graphical Analysis, to reveal information about an object’s motion.
