Concept: Motion is changed when friction is applied. Energy is transferred when surfaces touch.
Guiding Question: How can motion be changed and what happens as a result?
When one object collides with another, its energy is transferred to the second object.
Where did all that heat come from?
Why is the penguin able to easily slide across the snow/ice?
What other energy forms were created?
Why is this person unable to stand on the ice without slipping?

Variables
Independent variable - The factor (thing) that is intentionally changed; it causes a change. There should never be more than one independent variable.
Dependent variable - The factor (thing) that changes as a result of the independent variable. It is the factor that is measured during the experiment.
Controlled variable - The factors (things) that are not changed in the experiment. They are kept intentionally the same.
Control group - A group of subjects that is not exposed to the independent variable.

Lab: How Does Mass Affect Friction?
Use the data below. Find the mean. Use that data to complete the graph and to complete the C.E.R. Refer to the graph as an example.
