The Science of Cells

Cell Identification & Classification

Two (2) major types of cells: prokaryotic (simple) and eukaryotic (complex)

Further subdivided into plant and animal cells based on Structure & Function!

In humans (animal cells), there are four (4) major categories/types of cell:

  • connective
  • epithelial (this is the type of cell that became cancerous in Henrietta's cervix)
  • muscle
  • nervous

Comparative Embryology

If you recall from our third (3rd) Instructional Segment (IS3) in Biology: The Living Earth, Evidence of Evolution, we discussed commonalities (MRCA) amongst organisms throughout the phylogenic tree of life. In the third (3rd) Topic (IS3.T3) of that segment, we elaborated upon homologous structures such as bones and teeth. (Recall "one bone, two bones, eight bones, phalanges!")

There are, in all, three (3) major areas of comparative study that offer credence to the claims of Evolution through Natural Selection:

  • Homologous and Analogous Structures
  • Comparative Embryology
  • Genomic Comparison/Relation (DNA/RNA similarities)
