Advanced Placement Chemistry is a university-level course. It is intended for highly motivated students preparing to enter a science, engineering, or medical field of study in college. Topics covered include atomic theory, quantum mechanical nature of the electron, nature and phases of matter, gas laws, chemical periodicity, chemical bonding, mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, acid-base behavior, oxidation-reduction and electrochemistry. This class includes a combination of lecture, demonstration and weekly lab exercises. Also emphasized in the course are strategies for successfully completing the College Board Advanced Placement examination. A “C” or better in both semesters earns the student one unit for the “D” requirement on the UC/CSU A-G list.
