Unit 3
UNIT 3: CELL TRANSPORT
IN THIS UNIT WE WILL EXAMINE HOW CELLS MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS BY CONTROLLING WHAT ENTERS AND LEAVES THROUGH THE CELL MEMBRANE. EXAMPLES OF PASSIVE AND ACTIVE TRANSPORT WILL BE DISCUSSED, AND PREDICTIONS WILL THEN BE MADE ABOUT WHERE SOLUTES AND WATER WILL MOVE DEPENDING ON DIFFERENT CONCENTRATION GRADIENTS. LAB EXPLORATIONS OF OSMOSIS WILL BE PERFORMED ON EGGS, AND STUDENTS WILL EXPAND THAT KNOWLEDGE TO EXPLAIN HOW IODINE MOVES WHEN PLACED IN A HYPOTONIC SOLUTION.

Bio.1.2.1 Explain how homeostasis is maintained in a cell and within an organism in various environments (including temperature and pH).
Compare the mechanisms of active vs. passive transport (diffusion and osmosis). Explain changes in osmotic pressure that occurs when cells are placed in solutions of differing concentrations.
Bio 4.2.2 Explain ways that organisms use released energy for maintaining homeostasis (active transport).
