NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
By: Sonam Choetso
Native American Heritage Month spans the month of November to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Native peoples across the United States. It was first proposed in the early 1900s by Native leaders like Dr. Arthur C. Parker, who wanted to set a time to recognize Indigenous peoples. It became officially recognized in 1990 when President George H. W. Bush signed a proclamation designating November as Native American Heritage Month. It’s a time to recognize the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities, as well as to learn about their traditions, languages, and ongoing influence on American society. During this month, people celebrate by learning about and honoring Native cultures through events like powwows, art exhibits, and storytelling. Many people also read books by Native authors, visit museums or historical sites, and support Native-owned businesses to show support and appreciation for Indigenous heritage.

Step forward
By: Josey Johnston
A step forward.
Green light.
The coast is clear.
Distant sound of crickets chirping
In the fields of concrete.
The scent of bonfires grows
As marshmallows roast.
Fireflies watch from the streetlamps.
Step forward.
Yellow light.
Coasting near.
Flickering in the dead of night
In the fields of concrete.
Smoke fills the sky
As thoughts fill my mind.
Winged stars float from their nests.
Inch forward.
Red light
Unclear
Crackling insects shriek
The stone trees quake
Fires become wild
Step back
Fire flies
Red light
Dead of night
Too bright
Blurry sight
Step back
Step back
Step back.
Green light.
Coasting clear.
Fields of concrete
Show no fear.

It saddens me to say,
I’ve got bad news Jim;
You are not him
In the dingiest of alleys,
On the darkest of nights,
The devil utters his most insidious words;
“What’s up folks?”

They say that I’m bald,
While I make them mald,
Cause I’m not nearly as bald,

NATIONAL TAKE A HIKE DAY
By: Nico Dickhausen
Celebrated on November 17th, this day was established to encourage people to get outside and move! Since COVID, I have had a hard time getting outside, and I know a lot of people do. I personally love hiking and going outside, especially with the fall colors and smells. Even simply taking a walk down your street or at a nearby park can really improve your mood and overall mental attitude. You can also find local trials on websites, as well as on the American Hiking Society website. I also suggest that if you go out, bring a bag with you and pick up any trash you see. Anytime I go on a walk, I bring a bag and pick up trash, which makes me feel like a better person afterward. You can also go on a hike or walk with a friend, which is one of my favorite things to do. If you are going on a long hike, make sure to wear proper footwear, some snacks, and a big water bottle. Bring a map, compass, or cellular device to make sure you know where you're going. Make sure to check the weather, bring layers, waterproof clothes, and sunscreen.
Enjoy hiking and stay safe!
Senior Profile: Ya’myali Quinn
By: Fairis Cuneo
Q: What do you like best about HCIS?
A: I really like how different it feels physically from other schools, it’s an old plumber building so it has a really weird set up and I like seeing what teachers do with their weirdly shaped rooms, like Mrs. Holte’s stage. I like that. Also the teachers. In my freshman year I think I was a bit scared to really talk to them to be honest but now I realize how cool they are and how helpful they’ve been, especially this year. I really appreciate them and their pleasant aura.
Q: What are you going to do after you graduate?
A: I’m either going to go straight to a four year university or do two years at Fon-Du-Lac and then continue education from there. I’m hoping to go into gynecology, it’s difficult but it’s something I care about and it’s something that needs more people. I don’t think I’ll ever not care about female health. I’m also thinking about going into social work or general nursing.
Q: What advice do you have for younger students?
A: My biggest thing is that when I was an underclassman I thought “oh it won’t matter if my grades aren’t that good” it will. It will matter later and you’re going to regret skipping those assignments. Another thing, sometimes enough is enough. If you don’t need to write full paragraphs or endless information, don’t do it. Of course for some assignments it’s nice to go above and beyond sometimes, but don’t put yourself into an assignment that isn’t worth that much, you’ll exhaust yourself. The last thing is to communicate with and be nice to your teachers. Teachers are so much more willing to work with you if you show them basic respect. It’s really beneficial to just be polite and realize they aren’t your enemy. Generally just be nice, work on being a nicer person however you can.
Q: What was your favorite movie from over the summer, why?
A: Superman, that movie, especially just before the beginning of the school year just filled me with such beautiful hope. It made me want to make the world a better place and it helped me realize I have the power to do that, everybody does. And that rich, bald people are evil.
Q: If you could hangout with any fictional character, who would it be and why?
A: Superman, because he's such a pleasant person. I think we could have some really nice conversations about life in general, and about the political economic state of the world we are living in right now. And he could fly me around and that would be really cool.
Q: What is your favorite flavor of gum, elaborate?
A: I don’t chew gum often, but when I do I typically go for watermelon. Watermelon is both the best and worst flavor because it’s really strong in the beginning but it's gone in like, less than five minutes of chewing. It’s either that or mint.
Q: What will you miss most about high school?
A: Probably gonna miss all the dances. The dances, because I don't really know the college equivalent of a prom, there isn’t one and I’m gonna be sad that those aren’t really a thing anymore. College offers a lot of independence and I'm kind of excited for that but also kind of nervous because I'm gonna really have to work on my self discipline.
Q: What are you excited for after high school?
A: I’m excited for the independence and fully kinda being able to do what I want to do. I'm also excited to meet new people. It feels like in high school, naturally not in a bad way, fall into their groups, their cliques and it seems like when people grow up they grow out of that and I'm excited to see how my friend group will grow and change.
Q: What are the rules of UNO? (Normal? House? Spicy?)
A: When somebody puts down a 0 that means no matter what everybody has to give their hand of cards to the person to their right. If somebody puts down a 7 you have to swap your hand with somebody even if you don’t want to. In my freshman year me and some friends woul;d go to the library quite a lot and play UNO in the teen area and we would pick a random number like 4 or something and if somebody were to play that number we had to be quiet and we couldn't say anything until somebody laid down that number again. It was really silly and fun.
Q: You’re on an island with one other person, what game are you bringing?
A: Preferably something versatile, probably just a standard deck of cards because you can do a lot with that. And should we have enough time we could make up our own games.
Artist of the month!
Ft. EvaRose Moen
By: Olivianna O'Leary
What are your favorite styles of art?
~Anything stylized, or involved blows my mind! Surreal art is always cool, art that holds a lot of energy is always fascinating!! For me though I love graphite, also me and my dad love collages
Would you ever make this a profession?
~Yes!! My dream is actually to have an animated show of my own, I have such a deep relationship with art and can’t see myself doing anything different.
Who are some artists you have taken inspiration from?
~ ( famous artist still working on the name and pronouns), “I’m Not A Human” Is one of (pronouns) art pieces, is a big motive from (pronouns) to me. Nuami Marciniak (past student), all of her art is so cool and beautiful plus so colorful!! My dad too, he actually does collage also which I love! Malcolm Salgy (senior at Harbor city), is a very big inspiration. He has the coolest, most unique art style ever, and he inspired me to be more unique about my art!
Is there a specific theme to your art that you notice?
~Yes very much so, so phycology, my art always/ most of the time leads back to phycology in different ways. The realistic scary theme also is something in like all of my pieces, also human relationship is a big one for my art, i like to put as much into the eyes as I can.
What are some unique techniques you have started to use recently?
~Water color, collage, I love building up skin tones and untraditional combinations of colors!
Do you put life issues, feelings, or memories into your drawings and paintings?
~Yes, It helps me, I’ve gone through a lot and it helps to at least put something down on the page. That's another thing, I just started to be able to finish drawings in a day's time but before I could never find myself finishing a drawing. So I started piecing them together and it made a beautiful collage of unfinished pieces, and made the unfinishness into something really cool and brought it alive!
How long did it take you to complete your most detailed piece?
~I really don’t know what my most detailed piece is, but one that I did like, a year ago took a very long time to complete! Because I like to make sure I narrow down into one detail of the drawing, and make sure that one thing is accurate, before thinking about other big details.
What emotions do you have when making an art piece?
~ Frustration, but nothing brings me as much joy as making art! But it takes a while to get to the easy part and get to get in the flow of what you're making, so I would call it the most frustrating joy ever!!
MOVIE REVIEW
By: Doubletooth Grizzly
Today I will be talking about one of my favorite movies! “The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)”. I think I’ve watched this movie 4 times. The story is all about a man named Edmund Dantès that is betrayed by his friend, mainly for a woman. He is sent away to rot in prison for the rest of his life due to his knowledge of treachery. After many years of despair, Edmund abandons the message he carved on his prison wall: “GOD WILL GIVE ME JUSTICE”. After some time Edmund discovers a newfound hope. With that hope he learns much, develops new skills and knowledge, and finds a way to escape that druery prison. Edmund sets himself on a mission of long arrived revenge. The following events demonstrate his prolonged plan he has had much time to think on. The story has many twists and turns. And even plot twists. This movie is very compelling with its connections that’ll make you sit up, whistle twice, and point at the screen. Gen-Z will get that reference! There are also some very prominent actors in this movie! Such as Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, the late Richard Harris, Dagmara Domińczyk, Luis Guzmán, James Frain, and even young Henry Cavill. Pretty goated cast if you ask me! If you’re looking for an absolutely riveting movie to experience, take a look at The Count of Monte Cristo!
MY FAVORITE MOVIE
By: Zach Lawnmower
One of my favorite movies of all time, which is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which is a western movie, which also happens to be one of my favorite movie genres. Some of the things that I like about this movie is that the three main actors in my opinion are perfect for the movie and the role they play because each of them have experience either starring in or playing important roles in many other westerns. And I don't want to spoil anything while writing this so I won't go very in depth on what happens in the movie but I would recommend it to anyone because I think it’s one of the best westerns of all time. But it’s one of the very few movies that I could rewatch and not be bored out of my mind.
WARRIORS THROOMF REVIEWS; GOTHAM SEASON ONE
By The Warriors Throomf
Synopsis;
Gotham is a 2014 soap opera/crime drama based around the fictionalized prequel setting of Gotham City from the Batman series. Many of the episodes in season one have a monster/killer of the week trope with the duo of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) solving the mysteries. The plots also often follow well known rogues like The Penguin (Robin Lorde Taylor) and The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith). It is important to note that Gotham is The Show of all time.
Gotham is kind of an objectively bad show. And yet, I love it with my whole heart. It has some… interesting plots, but the characters are so well written and bring so much life to the show. Harvey Bullock was not any of our favorite characters when we started the show, but The Spirit of the Goat (dir. TJ Scott) changed everything. The episode does an amazing job of humanizing Bullock past just being an archetype. One of my favorite overarching stories to follow is that of Edward Nygma, The Riddler, but he doesn’t start out as The Riddler. For the majority of season one, he is just a guy who works in forensics for the GCPD. It all starts when the woman he has a crush on turns out to be in an abusive relationship with a cop named Tom Dougherty (Zachary Spicer). When Nygma confronts Dougherty, Dougherty gut punches him, and when he pulls Nygma up to punch him again Nygma stabs him (and it’s beautiful). Season two has more about him actually becoming The Riddler as people know him. Gotham just has so many fun and unique takes on all the characters and for the most part I really enjoy them. Gotham does an amazing job with Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee). I feel like I never really see Batman media show the fact that he was in a very elite special force team for the British Army, but throughout the show we have seen Pennyworth kick butt in fights with people much bigger than him and just have general physical prowess. There is so much
more I could say about this show, but I’ll leave you with this: if you are looking for a show to watch with friends, here it is. There is so much to love about this show, including how cheesy it is at times.
I love this terrible show. It has so many wonderful moments. Like Oswald Cobblepot getting crushed in a car, and Oswald Cobblepot getting drowned in a lake, and Oswald Cobblepot covered in blood, and of course: Fish Mooney (beating Oswald Cobblepot with a chair). One thing that surprised me going into this show is just how funny it manages to be. When the idea of a Batman crime drama was pitched to me I initially thought I was going to dislike Gotham for taking itself too seriously. In reality, the opposite occurred: this show is silly. For example, one of the killers of the week is ‘The Balloonman’ (Dan Bakkedahl) who sneakily ties weather balloons to his victims and also is partially a reference to the balloon priest of Brazil (Padre Baloeiro). Side: note this show is really unhinged with its references to odd historical events and comics, so if you like either of those you’ll have fun with this. While it’s sometimes over the top I love that Gotham allows itself to be a little whimsical and that it’s self-aware about it; the silliness greatly added to the viewing experience of Gotham.
The talent of the Gotham cast cannot be understated, as well as the artistic directors and costuming department. Do you know how many Dutch angles are in this show? I could count them all on my fingers if I had a thousand of them. Oh and, let us not forget the soundtrack. Cultivating vibes utterly unmatched, the Gotham Soundtrack captures something undeniably macabre and techno-noir-esque. Whether it’s original tracks such as “Penguin Strikes” that set your nerves alight, or Johnny Cash’s dusky country classic “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”- It all just hits differently, so to speak.
I hesitate to declare with my full chest: “This show is downright buns," but it sort of is. The cheese is everflowing. The cornball is constantly being rolled up that hill by some undying spandex-clad Sisyphus. Amidst the roiling fondue pot that is Gotham (2014), it is chock-full of charm and drama of the highest caliber. I think to truly and deeply enjoy it all, one must allow themselves a certain suspension of disbelief. This goes for many cheesed-up television series, especially those from the 2010s. Once you earnestly take the show for what it is at its core, the joy truly is endless.

DEPRESSION MOTH
By: Josey Johnston
Depression is a moth lying in bed.
Its brain flutters between life and death.
Freely enslaved and silently pained
The warmth of its blanket keeps it safe.
It stares at a blaze at the end of the room
Watching the glow of its nearing doom.
It quietly waits. Its head starts to ache.
The warmth turns into flames.
