Students in Kindergarten are using pounding and fingertapping to spell words alone for their test. Students are taught the letter/sound coorespondance on Mondays and practice doing pounding and fingertapping each day of the week through dictation.
Students in First grade are learning higher level spelling rules and skills such as the 1-1-1 spelling rule for the ending sound /k/ and spelled -ck (seen above). Students are also taught 2-5 "red words" or what some call sight words during the week and asked to spell those as well. Students are taught expected and not expected sound in the red words...which make them "red words."
