The Ladder of Reading
Only 40% of students learn to read with broad instruction. 60% of students WILL NOT learn that way, therefore they need code-based EXPLICIT, systematic, and sequential instruction, which is what Hancock County Schools currently offer our students through Structured literacy instruction. Students in Hancock County begin Orton- Gillingham instruction in Kindergarten and continue portions of it throughout their elementary years. Then, students in middle and high are taught the Word structure through instruction in Morphology.

The Simple View of Reading explains that students must be taught and have Word Recognition AND Language Comprehension to have GOOD Reading Comprehension. One without the other results in reading deficits.
