MLA or Modern Language Association style is a system for documenting sources in scholarly writing, particularly in the Humanities. Used by academics for over 50 years, it is now in its 9th edition and can be referred to as MLA9.
APA or the American Psychological Association style is a system for documenting sources in scholarly writing, particularly in the Social Sciences. Used by academics for over 90 years, it is now in its 7th edition.
Chicago (or CMOS Chicago Manual of Style) is a system for documenting sources in scholarly writing, particularly in literature, history, and the arts. Used by academics since 1891, it is now in its 18th edition.
