Coming Soon!!!
My student of the year is Brianna Vale. This year I had a really tough time picking a student of the year. So many of my students had great grades, attendance, leadership and everything else you’d expect a student of the year to have, which is saying something since we added AEMT certification. This year I had to look deeper than just being a great student, I had to look for personal growth, dedication, and determination.
Bri entered my course as a shy and timid student. For the first quarter I think the only time I heard her voice was when she gasped with a look of terror when we discussed some of the macabre topics covered in EMS. Though there were some tears along the way, Bri faced her fears, completed the course, final and clinicals easily obtaining her EMT certification.
What started off as a joyful moment of moving on to advanced EMT, was quickly replaced with one of her greatest fears, needles. All AEMT students had to obtain 3 successful IV’s on each other before being released to the field to practice on actual patients. This is where Bri really started to show personal growth, and stood out to me. The first IV Bri had done to her involved fear, tears and panic, while her last IV she stared at the needle going in while giving tips to the student, and encouraging her to “dig” when she didn’t initially hit the vein.
Bri continued to grow by stepping out of her comfort zone by competing at the HOSA State Conference, and attending many hours of AEMT clinicals without the need of encouragement.
Although Bri was unable to complete AEMT, Watching Bri progress, not only academically but as a person, has been one of my highlights of this year. While I am proud of what all of my students have accomplished in this year, I am especially proud of Bri who has overcome every challenge and fear she met this year. Well almost every fear, don’t worry, we will tackle the fear of butterflies next.
Good Morning I am Ryan Cogdill. My program is EMS and my Student of the Year is a senior from HAST.
For someone who didn’t want to actually be in the medical field, she has been an exceptional student.
It is my pleasure to introduce Jessica Moreno. Who is receiving this award for many reasons
She received the highest grade in the class, was the first student to complete her skills check off this year, and at HOSA placed 4th in the EMT event and 2nd in health career display. Jessica also took on leadership throughout the year. She never hesitated about taking lead in assignments and projects and was not only the class advisor, but the president of the AM advisors. Even with the leadership roles, Jessica was overall quiet in class, but excelled in clinicals and internships when it came to communicating and caring for patients. Although I am sad Jessica does not plan on going into patient care, I am happy she will be engineering the medical equipment that will be used in the future.
