Emergency Medical Tech since 2012
Primary Instructor since 2017
Advanced EMT since 2022
Like most EMT's I have spent much of my career working on an ambulance. The majority of my ambulance career was spent working for Prompt Ambulance. During my time at Prompt I gained experience working BLS & ALS transfers. I also spend time working ALS 911 ambulances in much of Lake County, and BLS 911 ambulances backing up Gary Fire Department. I spend a little over one year as a field trainer which allowed me to gain insight on what new EMT's were missing in classes and began to work with our education department with new hire training. Currently my main focus is now teaching, however, I truly love EMS and still work part time in Benton County EMS as an advanced EMT and as a volunteer fighterfigher for a local department.
After my time on the ambulance I spend 2 years working for Franciscan Health in the ER. This position allowed me to see the other side of the EMS system experiencing what it was like to care for a patient after the ambulance leaves. Having experienced both sides of patient care, I am able to understand the unpredictable chaos of an emergency scene, but also understand what matters to the ER and why. My time in the ER helps me to bridge a gap between hospital and pre hospital staff, which I share with my students.
Throughout my entire EMS career I loved being involved in education. Weather it be new hire training on the ambulance, EMS training in the ER or helping out at various EMT courses in the area, I loved to teach. In 2017 I obtained my Primary Instructor certification which allowed me to teach EMT programs. At this time I began to teach adult EMT classes for Franciscan, where I obtained both my EMT and PI certifications, and helped restructure the training program into what it is today. A few weeks before the start of the 18/19 school year I accepted the position as EMT instructor for the ACC. While my main focus is teaching for the ACC, I do still work PRN for Benton County EMS. This allows me first hand experience in the changes that occur in EMS and bring new experiences into the classroom.
One of the perks of EMS is no shortage of work opportunities. While working a main job at the hospital or on an ambulance I also took opportunities to broaden my knowledge. I spend a few years working as a sub in the health office for the School City of Hammond. This gave me a unique insight on care for pediatric patients, something often lacking on the ambulance. While at the hospital I took the role of ER lab quality assurance which gave me a greater insight on the testing required to make sure equipment was functioning as needed. I also am a member of the District 1 response team and helped briefly during the COVID-19 crisis at the Emergency Operations Center.
