Located on the 1st floor of the Bush Student Center, the Rec Desk serves as the home for Campus Rec. Desk staff can help you get involved with rec programs or answer any general questions.
The Rec Desk also has a variety of recreational equipment available to check out, including: basketballs, volleyballs, lawn games, camping equipment and plenty more! All free of charge with your Hamline ID.
Recreational clubs are student-run organizations that provide opportunities for individuals to engage in various activities and hobbies outside of academics.
Rec clubs offer a relaxed and social environment where members can meet new people, learn new skills, and have fun while doing so.
Unlike varsity sports teams, rec clubs are typically low-key and don't require a high level of experience or commitment, making them accessible to anyone looking to try something new or simply stay active.
The Rec Clubs program continues to expand with new organizations started by motivated students each year:
Cheer Team
HU Climbing Club
Hamline University Esports Club
HMAC (Hamline Martial Arts Club)
R.I.S.E. Yoga Club
Badminton Club
Intramurals offer open and inclusive recreational activities on the foundation of sportsmanship for all current Hamline students, staff, and faculty to enjoy.
Intramurals provides a safe & fun environment for participants to develop and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle through involvement in competitive or recreational sports leagues, tournaments, special events, and open gyms.
Proud to be a Piper
At Hamline, we don’t sit back idly and wait for things to happen. We take bold action to make them happen.
Our mascot, The Piper, represents our unruffled courage, dogged determination, and innate drive to take the lead. Armed only with a brave heart and a song, Pipers of yore led troops boldly into battle, marching at the forefront. Like the Pipers of the past, we are fearless leaders, driven by purpose and passion to set the pace and inspire others along the way.
Before the Piper, Hamline's athletic teams were represented by our school colors, the Red and Gray. In the early 1920's our athletics became increasingly successful and in 1922 a new athletic field with a stadium and track, known as New Norton Field, was completed. As interest in the teams grew, Hamline enlisted the St. Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatch writers to help us replace the traditional name of the Red and Gray with a new mascot.
Suggestions came in, among them Red Sox, Red Legs, and Cardinals. But the suggestion that caught on was The Pipers, taken from Robert Browning's poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin." Ever since then, The Piper has proudly served as our mascot, bringing luck to our sports teams, school spirit to our students, and excitement to the campus.
