WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
We had a very successful open house this month on Friday October 4! Thank you to everyone who came and brought your family and friends! The entire month of October has included 12 field trips for elementary schools to come through and bring their 5th grade students. It has been a special time seeing the ES students get so much enjoyment and excitement out of coming - and to see our students present well and share all of their knowledge! I've taken A LOT of pictures, but here are just a few.
In Enhanced Algebra, we have been learning about radicals- square roots and cube roots. We have recently moved into polynomials. Our next CBA (test) will be on 11/6.
In Geometry, we have learned about congruent and simliar triangles. Here you can see the Geometry kids using similar triangles and shadows to measure the heights of tall objects. Our next CBA (test) will be on 11/15.
In Ninth Grade Lit, we started the month reading the writings of Edgar Allen Poe (October is certainly the right time to do it). We explored how Poe establishes his trademark eerie mood, played detective in questioning the reliability of his narrators, and even attempted to rap "The Raven."
Since then, we have been gearing up lately to read Romeo and Juliet! In addition to practicing the language of Shakespeare and seeing how language changes over the course of four hundred years, students taught each other about the world of Shakespeare through an informational Jigsaw Activity.
This month in Social Studies we have made lots of progress through early American history including finishing up the colonial era, learning the causes of the American Revolution, and studying the early foundations of government including the Articles of Confederation and improvements made through the United States Constitution.
Students have participated in a variety of relevant activities to make history more applicable and come to life. These have included writing and aging their own versions of the Declaration of Independence and conducting an American Revolution Dinner Party. As Stamp Act simulation, see our king pictured to the right. Thank you to all parents that provided snacks and goodies to make these special lessons happen in Georgia Studies!
There are always exciting things happening in HS Physical Science, and October was no exception! We started the month with energy transfer and types of energy and quickly transitioned into heat with a challenging, but exciting lab on heat transfer and specific heat capacity! Students got to use tongs to move metal cubes from boiling water into room temperature water to see how much it would heat up the water and then calculate the specific heat capacity of each of the metals. We also had a fun time with different heat explorations and discovering different aspects of heat transfer
Then after Fall Break, students were either working on their portfolios for energy and heat, or were working on their enrichment project for Unit 3: Egg Drop Challenge! At the end of the day, of the 13 eggs: 7 were intact and 6 were splat! We saw a lot of creative ways to either slow down the egg (using knowledge of force and air resistance), absorb the impact of the fall (using knowledge of energy), or some contraptions used principles of both!
The last week in October, we have transitioned to Unit 4: Electricity. Students have had 2 labs in this unit so far! Building a solenoid and electromagnet, and now building a working series and parallel circuit. Students are enjoying the hands-on exploring of different aspects of electricity. At home, talk to your students about the electrical components in your home - show them the breaker box, the transformers in your neighborhood, a fuse in some Christmas lights. I think it would really help them to see some of the things we are talking about in class in their homes and discussing them with family and friends!
Academic Team is now 4-1 for the season! Last regular season meet is Nov 12, and PAGE Regional Tournament is Saturday Dec 7.
Students have been creating origami, artwork, and crocheted figures in our art enrichment!

Chick-fil-a biscuits are underway to help decrease the costs. You can volunteer here. If you have other fundraising ideas, we would love to see parents set up some more fundraisers this year! If anyone has a cabin or something similar to donate toward a raffle, that would be great! Please email Coach Greene for suggestions or if you'd like to head up or be a part of the fundraising committee: holli.greene@hallco.org. Coach Greene will be sending out an email to the fundraising committee this week. If you have any questions about the trip or payments, please contact Mr. Wildeboer: matthew.wildeboer@hallco.org.
