WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
In Enhanced Algebra, we finished up our last unit on Pythagorean Theorem and Volume. In Geometry, we finished our last unit on Probability. We will spend the next few weeks preparing for the Milestones. The Algebra EOC is 20% their grade and is on 4/30.
Since returning from Savannah, Ninth Grade Lit has had a number of different topics we have begun exploring since starting our final unit of the year: Freedom and Responsibility. We have read a southern gothic short story by Flannery O'Connor (whose farm we were able to visit on the Savannah trip). We have read a dystopian short story about anthropomorphic ponies by Kij Johnson to introduce our final novel of the year, Ray Bradbury's dystopian classic Fahrenheit 451. We have also devoted a significant amount of time to exploring English grammar (some of which involves the manipulatives in the photos).
It has been an active few weeks in Georgia Studies! Those that did not attend the Savannah trip were able to visit the Gainesville History Center. Students learned a colonial dance, made old fashioned candles, and learned all about the history of our area.
Students have also been busy learning all about Georgia's 3 branches of government. They showed their understanding by turning each government branch into a superhero, complete with super powers and names that matched each branch. I loved seeing the creativity that each student demonstrated!
Now, for the next 3 weeks, students will be busy planning for the annual mock trial courtroom simulation. The actual trial will take place April 22 - 24. We are super excited about our final simulation of the year!
In March we covered my favorite unit of the entire course (don't tell the other units!) - Bonding and Chemical Reactions (Unit #8)! I love learning how new substances are formed, and I love the number puzzle part of figuring out how elements come together, and then how they break apart! I hope the students enjoyed it as much as I did - and see how amazing it is to see these elements come together and break apart to form all the substance around us!
In this unit, we did a lot of hands on activities and manipulatives. As we have been balancing charges in bonding and then balancing chemical equations, we have utilized the white board and drawn models. We also got back out the unit cubes from when we used them to form model atoms with the Bohr model. This time instead of protons, neutrons and electrons, the unit cubes represented different elements and were used to balance chemical equations.
Students have been learning more about the chemicals in their everyday items such as food, cleaning products, etc. They worked on a household sort with some of these common chemical compounds in class, and then had an activity where they found their own at home! It's a great way for them to relate what we are doing in class to their own experiences in their lives.
Students performed a lab where they had to PROVE the Law of Conversation of Matter (LOCOM) using the chemical reaction between Alka Seltzer and water. This lab was different than any other because students had to write their own procedures! So each experiment was different - some used a baggie, others a flask or graduated cylinder and balloon.
We are now talking about solutions and acid/bases. How you can help at home is to talk to students about how to improve rate of solution/solubility in solutions they make at home (like sweet tea, lemonade, Kool-aid) and which household items are acids and which are bases. Our final exam is coming up at the end of April - Monday April 28. So it is important they are reviewing material from the WHOLE year (Aug-April) - both physics and chemistry to do well on that final exam (20% of their grade in the course) and the End-of-Year Milestones.
Savannah Field Trip has it's own page!
