WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY!
Students have been working hard at reviewing for the upcoming milestones! Our Algebra 1 test is 4/30 and the 8th grade math tests will be 5/1-5/2. The Geometry final is 5/15.
As we have been inching closer to Milestones, Ninth Grade Lit has been busy! We have carried on with our study of grammar, learning about verbals, active and passive voice, and grammatical mood. We have explored some of our more challenging shorter works with "A Modest Proposal" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find." And we have discussed censorship and the freedom to read as we continue to read Fahrenheit 451.
Students worked hard preparing for our annual mock trial court case. They planned for over 2 weeks for this 3 day simulation, and I was so proud of their performance. It was definitely a real world experience as students role played lawyers, witnesses, judges, bailiffs, and jury committee members. Currently, we are hard at work reviewing for the Milestones. I know they will do great!
March ended and April began with Unit #9: Solubility and Acids and Bases. We kicked off the unit with a fun 2-part lab. The first lab had them tasting different Kool-Aids to determine (and then model) the concentration of the sugar. And then they got to plan and carry out experiments to determine the 3 factors used to increase the rate of solubility of a solute in a solvent: agitation, surface area and temperature.
The fun and learning continued with a reciprocal learning activity to help understand how to read and interpret Solubility curves and some Acids/Bases Gizmos labs/activities to understand that concept and how it fits in with solutions! This included testing pH with litmus paper and using simulators to test pH.
Like all classes, we have been working hard to prepare for the final and the Milestones as we are here at the end of the year. The final was held on Monday 4/28 and I'm so incredibly proud of how hard each student worked to prepare and do their best on the assessment! Those converted grades were entered into the gradebook! The GA Milestones assessment will be held on 5/8. I will enter those grade into the gradebook as a "no weight" category once we get the results. One of the ways we prepared was through a fun 2-day game of Team Games Tournament!
After the milestones, students will write their final reflection for their portfolio, research for and participate in their last Socratic Discussion, and do some more fun labs and classroom activities to continue to apply what they have learned this year!
We realize that we had already entered Quarter 4 before doing our Quarter 3 Celebration... but better late than never right?
On Friday April 4, the DVA 8th graders got the opportunity to experience the Quarter 3 Unit Celebration: Catalyst for Change! In the science station, students got to conduct different fun experiments to discover some explosive chemical reactions: mentos and diet coke and baking soda and vinegar rockets. And discuss what the catalysts were for these chemical change!
Students also got to participate in math festival from 12:45-2, and work with like roles for the mock trial in the afternoon!
See some videos of Engineering Enrichment where students had their final plunge with Barbie Bungee!

Cherokee Bluffs County Park 9-11 AM
Volunteers & Donations Needed

DVA Field Day cannot happen without a LOT of help from parents. It is a super fun day and might be worth taking time off of work to have fun with our DVA families. We will need volunteers from 8:30 to 11:30 at Cherokee Bluffs County Park (AOD/SH campus if it is a "rain day" plan). Please drop your students off at school first--they will be getting ready with their homeroom team and arriving by school bus. High School age DVA alumni that are 16+ years of age may volunteer with their parents and any adult DVA alumni may also volunteer. If you are checking your child out after field day you MUST do so from school. They need to ride back to school on the bus.
