Hello! My name is Matthieu Maier, and I am the Elementary Band Director for the Haddonfield School District. I also teach music classes to grades 2–4 at Central School and serve as the Assistant Director of the high school marching band. I received a Bachelor's in Music Education from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, where I studied saxophone, served as the marching band's drum major, and was named a Presser Scholar. The upcoming 2025-2026 school year will be my third with Haddonfield, and I am ecstatic for it to be filled with music-making.
My philosophy of music education is built on creating a safe space for students to learn and express themselves through various musical experiences. Because no two students are the same, I am eager to learn about my students' personalities and learning styles. Individual instruction is vital to a young musician's success, so I have cultivated systems to ensure all students receive said instruction. I aim to make all of my classes, whether band or general music, an engaging experience where students participate in stimulating activities like singing, dancing, performing, listening, discussing, and more. During their time in my music classes, I aspire for students to create lasting memories that inspire a lifelong love of music.
Outside of the classroom, I love listening to live music (classical, jazz, alternative), cheering for all Philadelphia sports teams, and playing hockey. A fun fact is that I work as an instructor for Smith Walbridge Clinics, a summer marching band camp in Illinois for high school and college drum majors.
