Grading Policy

Each marking period grade is calculated as follows:

Projects, Processing & Website Submisisons: 85% (Each Project is graded out of 100 points)

21st Century Skills: 15% (There is a possibility of earning 25 points per day and subsequently, 100 possible points per week. (Being attentive, being prepared for class, behavior, attitude, and time management. Adhering to the rules and procedures as outlined on the website.)

You are expected to shoot a minimum of 75 photos per week for each Shooting Assignment. Typically, there will be a new shooting assignment every 2-3 weeks.

Each photograph has a potential of earning 1 point per image assuming that they are high quality and the correct subject matter.

You must have at minimum of 75 images to receive full credit for the shoot per week. I encourage you to shoot as many images as you can so you have a lot to choose from for your final image submission. It is to your benefit to shoot as many photos as you can so you have more choices in the long run which will work to your advantage.

If you only have taken 60 shots, the highest grade you can receive would be a 60% for the week assuming the images are all high quality.

There needs to be a wide range of variety in your photographs. There should be no more than 2 shots of each scene/subject matter.

There is a grading penalty for not returning the camera and/or not completing the shooting assignment. You will be marked as being unprepared for class and 5 points will be deducted from your project grade. An additional 5 points will be deducted for everyday afterwards. If the photos are never taken during the week, a total loss of credit will result. You will not be allowed to make up the shoot the following week. If you come to class unprepared, you are still required to make up the shooting assignment.

**Being Unprepared: If you come to class unprepared (without photos or the camera) you are required to complete an alternate assignment. The alternate assignment will be summarizing an article from the following website.

**The article will be no less than 750 words, single spaced, 12 point font size and must be completed in class to receive credit. You must include the date and title of the article. Each day you are unprepared, you will be required an write an additional article. If the article is not completed in class and submitted via Google Classroom, you will receive a zero for the day and the assignment**

Here are the 11 criteria that I will be using when judging the quality of each photograph:

1. Impact: The sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.
2. Technical Excellence: Retouching, manipulation, sharpness, exposure, and correct color are some items that speak to the qualities of the physical print.
3. Creativity: Original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.
4. Style: It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.
5. Composition: It is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.
6. Color Balance: An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.
7. Center of Interest: The point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.
8. Lighting: The use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is manmade or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.
9. Subject Matter: Should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.
10. Technique: The approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image.
11. Story Telling: The image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.
