In April 2020, HACC’s Student Government Association (SGA) contributed $100,000 to the HACC Foundation to provide students with resources to help eliminate the barriers that impede their ability to complete their education.

The funds will support the Fund for Excellence for CARE (Consultation, Advocacy, Referrals and Empowerment) to help HACC establish CARE Centers on each of the five campuses.

Many students are forced to choose between purchasing textbooks or buying groceries to feed their families. For example, a car breakdown can be utterly disruptive to a student’s academic progress. When students are worried about whether or not they will have a place to live next week, their courses are no longer a priority.

The CARE Center will be a single point of contact for students in need of non-academic support, which will allow the College to help students more efficiently and effectively get the help they need. Currently, students have to navigate the complexity of accessing community resources and resources provided by the College, which discourages them from seeking help. The CARE Center would eliminate the burden, humiliation and challenges that students face when looking for help.

The CARE Center will be the primary resource for students to seek support to overcome barriers that could threaten their ability to complete their studies at HACC.

You may not be looking to jump start your career as a YouTuber, but if you want to record content to submit to HACC’s YouTube channel, we have a few hints and tips for you to make your subject look and sound their best!

• Select a quiet room with a door. Background noise, such as people chatting in a hallway, HVAC systems, wind and water features can all cause distracting background sounds that make it difficult to hear and understand your subject.
• Find a space with good light. Have your subject face a window or go outside to find good lighting. Just beware of harsh, direct sunlight that makes your subject squint and casts dark shadows.
• Keep others out of the background of your shot. You don’t want to put people who did not consent to being on camera in your video.
• Include HACC logos in your shot if you can and avoid non-HACC logos. Avoid apparel and other objects that feature graphics or logos, such as a Disney character backpack, a Subway wrapper, a Starbucks cup, a Dasani water bottle, an Eagles hat or a Nirvana shirt.
• Fill the frame with your subject. This means getting close to your subject, which also gets your subject closer to the microphone, which is something you also want to do. However, don’t cut off the top of their head or the bottom of their chin.
• Place your subject in a chair that does not roll or swivel. Many of us get nervous when on camera and it’s easy to unintentionally move the chair around.
• Don't put your subject directly against a wall. Sure, it creates a nice blank background, but it also casts shadows. Move your subject a few feet away from the wall to reduce shadows.
• Record your video horizontally and not vertically, unless your video has a specific purpose for recording vertically.
• Be careful using phrases like “this semester” or “this year” or mentioning specific dates or years. This language will quickly make your video outdated and you probably don’t want to record your video every six months!
• Mention “HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College” in your video. Do not say “Harrisburg Area Community College,” “Wildwood Campus” or “main campus.” Refer to the HACC Communication and Style Guide on myHACC for other communication guidelines.
• Complete release forms to give the college permission to use your image and quotes to promote the college. There is a PDF and web version available.
