Setting the Tone for HACC’s Social Media Accounts

Social media engagement is an important strategy for building awareness and motivating current and future students, employees and others to connect with HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. But social media channels are not all the same – they attract different audiences who have different expectations.

Just as all HACC employees are ambassadors for the College, we are also social media ambassadors. All content that employees share reflects on HACC – especially content posted on HACC’s collegewide and campus social media accounts.

The Office of College Advancement developed a social media protocol document to guide the administrators on the College’s social media accounts and all HACC employees as they post content. The document outlines the primary audience, recommended tone and examples of posts for each of our social media accounts. Please review the document in the OCA channel on myHACC under “Social Media.”

Meet Chase: Dean’s List Student

“…I chose HACC since all of my classes would be paid for and there would not be much for me to cover tuition wise.”

HACC offers a variety of choices at its Midtown Trade and Technology Center in downtown Harrisburg. Chase Brown is currently working toward his degree in electronic engineering technology and learning how to install, operate, service and maintain complex electrical and electronic equipment.

“Since I am covered by military benefits, I chose HACC since all of my classes would be paid for and there would not be much for me to cover...” Chase said. Not only that, but Chase said he lives close to the Harrisburg Campus and does not have to travel far to get to his classes.

With classes on robotics, computer rebuilding and digital electronics, the program is designed to expand knowledge and teach practical skills. “HACC has improved my life by granting me knowledge in relation to things that I would consider useful,” he said. Despite taking seven classes one semester, Chase was able to maintain a strong GPA and make it onto the dean’s list (he admits that taking seven classes was “pretty hectic”).

Chase plans to graduate in May 2021. With his associate degree, Chase can apply his knowledge in the field and work his way up to a salary of more than $51,000/year as an electrical engineering technologist.

Business Program Marketing Campaign Makes Over 1.5 Million Impressions

In January 2019, the Office of Academic Affairs and Office of College Advancement teamed up to raise awareness of HACC’s Business and Business Administration programs.

A marketing plan was created, and the following tactics were successfully implemented:

Kudos to Erica Fleisher, Stephen Header and Steven Lustig for participating in the YouTube videos! Also, we extend a big thank you to Jason Nielsen, department chair of business, for coordinating the efforts!

The campaign ads ran from June to August 2019. The campaign had over 1.5 million impressions – the total number of times the digital ads and social posts were shown to users – and nearly 7,000 engagements.

Additionally, the number of applications in the Business Program increased 20% from fall 2018 to fall 2019.

Meet Jenny: Mom, Domestic Violence Survivor and Soon-to-Be HACC Graduate

Jenny Rascoe started her HACC journey in 2008. Like many HACC students, life experiences extended her educational timeline. She said, “I had to tend to my family, take a breather, write a book about surviving domestic violence and other abuses, and most recently, heal from a broken leg,” leading her to take breaks throughout her education.

The HACC nursing student said, “One of the great things about HACC is that you can stop and start as many times as you need and they’re always there. I’ve always been able to pick up where I left off seamlessly.”

“I struggled through a couple years of working full time and schooling on my own as a single mother. My grades suffered and I was clearly over extended.” Now, over 10 years later from her start with HACC, the proud mom is on track to graduate and complete her dream in 2021 at age 40! In fact, she is graduating the same year as her daughter who is graduating from high school!

She added, “My ‘new’ husband has been in my corner and pushing me to be my best. We have been married for 3.5 years and when I am in school, he takes care of dinner and chores and ensures our kids get to whatever sports and activities they need to.”

Jenny attends HACC while continuing to work at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UMPC) as an licensed practical nurse (LPN). She said one of her favorite things about HACC is that she’s been able to complete a lot of her coursework online. HACC offers numerous classes online for students to take at times that work with their life schedule.

Jenny’s advice to other women who may be in similar shoes is “Start somewhere. Pick a class and just start.”
