An incredible HACC retired senior professor emerita and former mathematics department chair, Pauline Chow, passed away on June 28, 2021 at the age of 69. Pauline was very active in HACC's iTunesU project and developed several popular courses. She was also very involved in mathematics organizations, she served as the secretary of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and as president of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PCTM). In 2015, Pauline was recognized with an AMATYC Teaching Excellence award and the ACCT Northeast Faculty award. After retiring from her full-time position at HACC in 2016 after 35 years of service, Pauline moved to California to be closer to her family. A link to her obituary can be found here, a life of service and excellence.
The Business Studies Department faculty are outstanding! Assistant Professor Richard Cordaro is another shining example of faculty who exhibit care for HACC students. International Student from Nigeria, Daniel Uwazie, is completing BUSI 101 this summer via independent study with Professor Cordaro. They are working together remotely, via phone, and in-person. Professor Cordaro has hosted international students previously and knows that providing extra support is appreciated. To show that support, Professor Cordaro invited Mr. Uwazie to join his family during a Sunday BBQ in the summer.
Congratulations to the English Department for their nomination for a Certificate of Excellence from the National Council on the Teaching of English (NCTE) based on their work in revamping our credit-based ESL program. The certificate honors programs that imaginatively meet the needs of students, faculty, institution, and locale; employ best practices; employ effective professional development of faculty of all ranks, including contingent faculty; treat contingent faculty respectfully, honestly, and humanely; and use effective assessment to drive program changes. Many thanks to Sue Gao, Lorrie Gendrue, Dr. Eileen Eckhart-Strauch, and Judy Sides for their work this summer, especially. This project received generous funding from the HACC Foundation to support our work and from the OER grant program. Awards of excellence will be announced in Spring 2022.
Cara Reasner (Class of 2021) was awarded the 2021 Pennsylvania Society for Respiratory Care Outstanding Student Award for HACC’s Respiratory Therapist Program. Professor Curtis Aumiller, Program Director for the program presented the award. This award is given each year and the student is selected by the faculty for the best overall student performance and the person most likely to give back to the profession of respiratory therapy.

The toolkit follows the theory and application approach by presenting ways faculty may incorporate inclusion, diversity, and belonging in course documents and course goals to emphasize justness in the use of course content to promote an engaging and academically challenging online and remote course. The toolkit will include best practices and additional content from faculty representing each academic school.

Paralegal Studies Certificate and AAS Program recently underwent a site visit for reapproval to remain an ABA (American Bar Association) approved school. The site visitors will be recommending that HACC’s programs continue to be approved by the ABA! We are thankful to have such strong leadership by the Business Studies Department Chair, Professor Steve Lustig, incoming Program Director, Associate Professor Legal Studies Alexandra Makosky, and Administrative Office Specialists, Jenny Heberlein and Heather Pragel.
With generous support from the HACC Foundation for faculty time in both Summer 2020 and 2021, we have created a program to meet the needs of today's English Language Learners seeking to develop their academic English skills.
New credit-bearing courses provide additional options and in-depth skill development to help students develop academic English skills with more flexibility. The courses are as follows:
ESL 030: Reading and Writing I
ESL 035: Reading and Writing II
ESL 040: Speaking and Listening I
ESL 045: Speaking and Listening II
ESL 050: Grammar I (optional and offered online)
ESL 055: Grammar II (optional and offered online)
ESL 070: Integrated Reading and Writing for English Language Learners
Students are free to enroll in mixed levels: For example, Reading and Writing II can be taken with Speaking and Listening I. All courses are 4-credits, except ESL 070 (3 credits).
These courses replace the six-credit courses ESL 027, 028, and 029 and eliminates the requirement that students progress through additional 0-level classes (ENGL 002, 051, and 003).
Further, ESL faculty have developed Open Educational Resources to support most courses through the OER initiative, reducing costs for students and providing immediate access to course materials.
Placement details are available in the Advising Guide. For more information, please contact Christine Nowik, English Department Chair (cmnowik@hacc.edu).
