Over the past years of designing learning experiences with and for educators and learners alike, we in Habi were able to observe and eventually define the qualities and characteristics that make up a well-designed learning experience. We have articulated 4 Design Principles which we consistently use to help guide us in our work, and we'd like to share these with you! We hope you can use these design principles to help you when you design and deliver your own LXs :D
Unified. Understandable. Directed.
Learning experiences should be easy to understand and follow, leaving minimal space for doubt and confusion. We focus on what is essential without sacrificing nuance
Accessible. Fair. Universally designed.
Learning experiences should respect and take into account the diversity of our learners. We utilize multiple modes, formats, and ways of engagement to reduce barriers to learning.
Authentic. Participatory. Adaptive.
Learning experiences should bring out the creative confidence in our learners. We provide space for our learners to personalize and actualize their learning experience.
Meaningful. Exciting. Aspirational.
Learning experiences should bring out a positive experience in learning. We provide experiences that stick and move our learners to action.
Is the content focused? Is it structured well?
Are there clear instructions for the learners who will use or interact with it? Do they know how to participate?
Are the tools and platforms easy to use?
Does it feel simple and understandable?
Are there possible points of confusion?
Does the content provide diverse perspectives and disciplines?
Can learners and/or teachers engage in dialogue, or relate with other people?
Are the materials available in multiple formats to accommodate diverse needs? Is the training offered in languages other than English?
Does the experience feel respectful and non-judgmental?
Can learners relate to the content?
Does it connect with their real-life and local contexts?
Can learners exercise agency and participate in the experience?
Are the materials responsive to their unique contexts?
Does the learning experience feel approachable, comforting and human?
Does the content provide new, innovative, or challenging ideas?
Can learners improve their knowledge and skill?
Are the materials delightful and well-crafted?
Does the experience feel aspirational, optimistic, or playful?
Does the resource, tool, or platform provide clear next steps to develop further?
The 4 Design Principles are simply guides to help you along the way as you design LXs. Since situations, learning needs, and challenges are as diverse as the learners we are designing for, there will be times when one design principle may need more particular attention than the others - and that's completely fine. Eventually you will see that all 4 of these principles work together to create meaningful learning for our learners.
The goal of keeping these 4 principles in mind, along with using the MISMO framework, is to help us more consistently design, develop, and deliver relevant, responsive, and impactful learning experiences.
We created this quick quiz to help you understand your own facilitation superpower, so you have a better idea on how to align the learning experience you are designing and implementing to how you would best facilitate it. Just click on the button below (which will ask you to make a copy of a Google Sheets file in your drive) to try out the quiz!
We curated these tools, platforms, and strategies to support you in facilitating LXs!
Take some time to freely explore these different resources. We encourage you to try them out, talk about them with your peers, and find ways to use these to enrich your teaching practice.
Primer on Facilitating Online Learning (10 minute read) - We developed this primer to help teachers transition into facilitating online learning experiences, by developing an understanding of the learning environment using a Space-People-Process framework.
Online Facilitation Toolbox (12 minute read) - Our executive director, Gerson, shares 6 reliable activities that any facilitator can use during online calls, as well as tips on converting favorite activities for online learning.
Tech Tool Kodigo (Padlet repository) - A curated repository of tools and platforms you can use for LXs, organized according to the 6 learning types.
Facilitating Creative Collaborations (microcourse) - Malayang Diwa created this micro course on Padlet and Sway, about facilitating creative collaborations.
Habi Hour: Let's Begin with a Check-in (15 minute podcast) - We talked to Teacher Candy Padilla and Teacher Tina Halal about their experiences in using a creative teaching strategy they first encountered in Habi workshops – check ins. Listen to their stories about creative kumustahan and cultivating a caring learning environment.
Habi Hour: Roses, Thorns and Buds (16 minute podcast) - Episode 2 of Habi Hour’s Turo-Turo Serye is all about Roses, Thorns, and Buds! RTB is one of our favorite activities for reflection, analysis, and feedback that has been well-received by both children and adult learners.
Habi Hour: Building your Facilitation Toolbox (19 minute podcast) - In this episode of Habi Hour, we talk to some Manghahabi Community members, to talk about their unending journey of finding their facilitator selves. They talk about their proudest and most challenging experiences as facilitators, as well as bits and pieces of what they have in their facilitation toolbox.
We believe that the best way to learn about how to facilitate better is by practicing it! These are optional, but we would like to invite you to:
Find a colleague that you can partner with to try and practice your facilitation skills on
OR
Record a video of yourself facilitating and either do some self-evaluations, or send it and gather feedback from a colleague
You can use the key questions under the 4 Design Principles to structure the feedback!
We would love to know more about your own experiences about facilitating learning. Use the Padlet board below to share the following:
Roses: What are the best practices you can share about facilitating learning experiences (LXs)?
Thorns: What are the challenges and painpoints in facilitating LXs?
Buds: What are opportunities and ideas that could be pursued when facilitating LXs?
What are your burning questions about facilitating LXs?
Just click on the (+) sign below each header to add a card! You can also put a heart on the cards made by others if you agree! For any burning question you may have, try to collaborate with peers and colleagues to try and find answers that fit your context.
