Schools are considered crucial institutions that foster critical thinking and awareness on issues surrounding patriotism, nationalism, and respect for history and heritage. Within the spaces of the schools, learners are exposed to different issues on culture, society, and politics from Kindergarten up until Senior High School in their Social Studies and Humanities and Social Sciences courses.
Given the changing and pressing concerns of the current political and social institutions, there is a need to sustain and strengthen the curriculum and instruction surrounding several social, civic, cultural, and political issues in today’s society. With this in mind, the Philippine Business for Education has launched the resource portal Sibika.ph. This resource portal helps young people to become informed and active citizens committed to upholding and preserving democratic institutions, values, and principles.
In particular, Sibika.ph aims to:
Provide resources on democracy and citizenship to educators and parents in the form of modules, expert videos and assessment tools;
Develop critical thinking by integrating student led exercises in the learning modules; and
Make learning relevant to the current context by encouraging class discussions on current issues and events.
The resource portal includes 17 modules on Understanding, Culture, Society and Politics (UCSP) subject that aims to be disseminated to UCSP teachers nationwide. Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) in collaboration with Habi Education Lab created this Training of Trainers (ToT) to enable teacher-trainers to implement training for UCSP teachers, that will introduce and advance the usage and adoption of the Sibika.ph resources in their UCSP classes.
By the end of this Program, Teacher-Trainers will:
Know the different resource modules that teachers can use from Sibika.ph
Know the basics of Learning Experience Design
Facilitate and implement their individual training programs for the usage of Sibika.ph modules in UCSP classes
Through the program, teacher trainers will be able to:
Design a variety of learning experiences for UCSP for different contexts and modalities (Online, face-to-face, hybrid)
Enhance their facilitation skills for adult learners (UCSP teachers)
Select appropriate teaching strategies for adult learners
Be empowered and confident in teaching and mentoring regarding the usage the Sibika.ph modules
This Training of Trainers is a blended learning experience spread out over 2 weeks, with a mix of self-paced, asynchronous content and 2-hour online training sessions. The roadmap below illustrates the different milestones for the Training of Trainers, as well as the expected topics and activities at each point of the experience:
Throughout the Training of Trainers experience, we have prepared activities, exercises and reflection prompts to help bridge the gap between theory and practice. We created a Learner Journal for you to use to document all the work and reflections you will be making over the course of this Training of Trainers, which you will have to complete by the end of the training. The Learner Journal is a live document which we will updated with new pages and prompts as we progress through each session. It will also serve as proof of your participation and completion of the Training of Trainers before you receive your Certificate of Completion.
The Training of Trainers program and the UCSP teacher training program was designed to align with the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers, to provide value as an opportunity for upskilling and continuing professional development for the participants.
The following slides show the domains and strands covered for teacher-trainers from career stage 3 and 4:
This Training of Trainers program will be facilitated by a team of Learning Experience Designers from Habi Education Lab, a Manila-based learning experience design studio that works to make well-designed learning experiences for everyone, and we are excited to join you as your facilitators in this training program!
