In Science we have integrated a range of strategies into lesson structure and delivery to support the inclusion of all learners. This ensures that all of the children at Gurnard Primary School receive a broad and balanced curriculum that is suitable to the needs of all.
Some examples of this include:
the ability of all children to choose their method of recording, along with the practical nature of the subject, all children can explore concepts and knowledge through enquiry and hands on experience.
All lessons begin with mini-assessment (last week, last term, last year) to build retrieval and ‘sticky knowledge’ - each mini-assessment is planned from data, from previous lessons, to strengthen understanding and tackle misconceptions. It also creates a pocket of time for interventions. This allows children to receive pre-teach in this period (as appropriate), and often children with additional barriers to learning choose answers physically, rather than recall through writing.
each new unit of learning begins with an ‘explore’ session - this includes a focus on new vocabulary and symbols to represent new ideas and concepts, along with a look at key topics and equipment.
all units are planned around the children's interests, being shaped from questions the children ask, maximising engagement and opportunity for all learners.
use of physical models to represent learning, such as building a human heart out of playdoh, or using string to learn how long our digestive system is!
Below are some images of our children and the wide range of inclusive experiences and recording strategies, other than in books, that we provide.
