Science Intent
At Gurnard Primary School, we believe that Science helps provoke, nurture and provide children with the skills to ask and answer the questions they may have about the world around them. Gurnard’s scientists are encouraged to develop a greater understanding of their community, their world and to respect their place within it.
We want our children to successfully understand why living and belonging to our world is important and to recognise that each of them has an individual role and responsibility to ensure that we look after it and its biodiversity. Within an ever-changing and uncertain world, we want our children to confidently navigate the seas of science in the media, through informed eyes; all our children will be regularly exposed to science in the news, ensuring they will be scientifically literate adults. Units of work are carefully planned and sequenced to ensure that prior knowledge is developed and built upon, with areas of opportunity available in all units to explore new developments in science, ask their own questions and both strengthen and practice their skills.
Throughout our scientific journey, we want all pupils to successfully grow and nurture a curiosity, fascination and understanding of the diverse plant, wildlife and resources which our planet offers us all. Together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s finite resources, we want our learners to make strong connections to sustainable use of materials and fuels, understand the importance of recycling, care about conservation, particularly of our local area and seas, as well as fully appreciate and respect their personal impact on the world around them. They will be able to make informed decisions and choices, and will be exposed to a diverse range of career opportunities, especially around new and sustainable scientific technologies, such as green energy.
Working together, we hope to ensure that our children progressively develop knowledge of the three areas of science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), along with the skills, and confidence, to be able to answer their own questions. Through memorable experiences and the development of complex scientific vocabulary and texts, they will build up the knowledge, investigative skills and interpersonal skills which will transfer into the world of work and truly incite/stimulate a desire to be curious and confident later on in life. They will belong, and be confident to live and work in the world of the future.
