At Gurnard Primary School, children embark on a journey through time where they can explore life and celebrate human achievements throughout history, imparting to them a rich, varied and chronological knowledge of the past. Throughout their history sessions, children experience the past in a ‘hands on’ manner, learn to think like a historian, and form a deep and empathetic understanding of how past communities lived and how this contrasts with modern life. Through study of our local area and historical sites, children learn about the changes and significant events which have shaped the Isle of Wight and the community to which we belong.
In addition, our History curriculum teaches children to respect and appreciate heritages which might differ from our own, including the earliest civilisations. Whether learning about local or world history, children are inspired to become intellectually curious about intriguing artefacts and hypotheses. Because of this, the historians of Gurnard become experts in analysing evidence and drawing their own conclusions based on the sources they encounter. This provides them with critical thinking and reasoning skills that will set them up for success throughout their lives.
